Background

The sharp lines of the original Z4 Roadster took BMW’s two-seater Z series sports car in a bold and thoroughly modern direction. Previous incarnations, the Z1, Z3 and the Z8, all traded heavily on past designs, harking back with retro re-workings of established designs. The Z4 silhouette – penned by Danish designer Anders Warming – ploughed its own furrow. It had chiselled good looks, sculpted flanks and blistered arches, it was bold, butch and brilliant.

Strong sales of the first-generation Z4 meant a follow-up was guaranteed. That arrived in 2009. The second-gen Z4, (E89 to us BMW designation nerds), brought with it a mountain of new tech but kept the visual updates subtle. Warming’s work remained bang on, even a decade after it first appeared. The E89 was the first Z since the Z8 to be built in Germany; to that point all Z3 and Z4 production had taken place at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. It was also the first Z to get a folding retractable hardtop; killing off the coupe Z4 in the process.

Overview

Rick has been the custodian of this lovely 2009 BMW Z4 SDrive 3.0i Roadster since July 2020. Purchased as a car for the summer months, it’s safe to say the car has been well enjoyed by Rick, covering approximately 10,000 miles. It's the perfect all rounder - two-seater, hard top and at the the touch of a button the roof is off allowing you to enjoy the sunshine.

Fitted with BMW’s SDrive, the Z4 comes well specced, with leather, metallic paint, folding mirrors, sat nav, and air conditioning, which is all as you would expect from a high end manufacturer. With just 32,900 miles showing on the odometer, this is backed up with a stamped service book, with the last full service carried out in July 2021 at 30,057 miles, when it also received a gearbox fluid change, which was due on time and certainly not mileage. There are invoices present for work carried out

such as tyres and servicing, along with the full complement of handbooks supporting the Z4.

Exterior

Finished in the lovely Space Grey, the Z4 is in very nice condition as you would expect from the low mileage covered. There are a few stone chips to mention along the lower section of the front bumper and the odd one to the upper part and bonnet, but we would say there is less than you would expect for the age and mileage of the vehicle. The long bonnet looks to align as it should with the wing rails and bumper. The headlight units have a nice clear lens, which are free from any chips or splits.

Looking at the Z4 from a side profile view, it’s easy to appreciate the lines, creases and curves, which are all in the right place to equip this Roadster with the stunning looks created by the BMW design team. There are no nasty dings to mention and looking down the length of the car, it is as straight as a die. You may see the odd little light scratch here and there, which have been pointed out in the gallery photographs, but it does look like some of these could be quite easily polished out or significantly reduced with a professional detail. The Z4 is fitted with folding mirrors which are working as they should.

The roof is in excellent order and folds away as you would expect in the respectable time of around 20 seconds. To the rear of the car, the curves of the shapely quarters draw around to the smooth rear end. There are no scuffs to mention to the bumper, thanks to the rear parking sensors, the lights are in good order, and the boot lid aligns as it should.

The wheels are the original 10 spoke alloys and are in good condition, with just a couple of age related marks to them. The centre caps have lost a touch of their colour where some water has found its way in. The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 4, and were fitted in November 2020. These were chosen in favour of run flats, as they offered a more comfortable ride, and in Rick’s words, have transformed the ride quality of the Z4 immensely.

Interior

Coral Red was the colour choice for the Z4, and it looks stunning against the contrasting Space Grey exterior. The electric leather seats are in excellent condition

with virtually no wear to the bolsters. There is just a tiny scuff mark which could easily be touched in, but for the age and mileage this really is being picky, they are that good!.

The dashboard shares the same sharp lines of the body, finished with a black upper section, silver to the centre and red to match the seats on the lower section. This is all in excellent order, with no damage to report. The instruments are working as they should, with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running. The ventilation controls are also in good order, with no wearing to the letters on the buttons. Just above the centre air vents is the head-unit, which also has satellite navigation and Bluetooth for phone connection. For listening to music from your phone, this has to be done by connecting it to the auxiliary cable. Lower down is the CD head-unit and gear stick, which shows no wear, and finally the iDrive control, used to navigate your way around the different settings of the Z4.

The carpets are in excellent condition, and have been kept like this with some factory fit mats which are also very clean. This is repeated up above, with the headlining for the removable hard top in a clean and well presented condition. The same can be said in the boot, which has the original tool kit, warning triangle and first aid kit present. The only thing to mention here is that there are two clips broken which hold the cover for the hard top in place, but with that said, this doesn't affect how it works.

Mechanical

The 3.0i inline-six fills the engine bay nicely, and looks to be nice and dry with no signs of any leaks. The car starts up as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine, and there was a new battery fitted recently.

Rick reports the car to drive as it should, even smoother than it did thanks to the Michelins. As you would expect from any 6 cylinder BMW, the car pulls well through the automatic gearbox and is even stronger if you give the little sport button a press.

On the road the Z4 achieves a 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, thanks to the 255bhp 3.0 litre inline-six. The car comes to a halt as it should with no juddering through the pedal.

Looking under the Z4 shows nothing untoward, and it has to be said, it is very clean for a vehicle over 11 years old. We would say that the car has had minimal use in the

wet, looking at the lack of surface corrosion to the suspension components.

History

With just 32,900 miles covered since it was registered on the 5th january 2010, this definitely is a low mileage car. The mileage is backed up with a stamped history book, and always nice to see is the tool kit, first aid kit, warning triangle and hand books present, together with 2 keys.

The last service was carried out in 2021, and since then the Z4 has covered approximately 2,900 miles, so will not be due for some time. The current MoT is valid until the 16th July 2022.

Summary

Definitely a BMW to consider if you are in the market for a two-seater roadster. The SDrive 3.0I has so much to offer in terms of quality, luxury, performance and practicality thanks to the removable hard-top roof. The 3.0 litre inline-six is enough to keep you entertained, and it’s easy to get carried away listening to it sing through the rev range.

With the weather about to turn towards the summer, this is the car of choice if you are looking for something which you can enjoy all of the time. Rain or shine, with the typical British weather, if you do get caught out, in 20 seconds the roof will be up and all of a sudden the rain doesn’t matter. Are you ready for summer? You will be with this stunning Z4 in your ownership.

We estimate that this lovely 2009 Z4 sDrive 3.0I Roadster will bring in the region of £12,000 - 15,000.
