The second generation Z4, model code E89, may be the second model in the Z4 family, but in some ways, it’s a car of firsts. It was the first BMW EVER to be designed completely by female designers; Juliane Blasi (exterior) and Nadya Arnaout (interior), and it was also the first Z Series model to feature a retractable hardtop.

Not only did this mean that there were no separate coupe or roadster models, but there was also no Z4M, either. That’s not to say the new model was all show and no go though, as if you went for the right version, you could have a thumping 3.0 litre straight-six petrol engine (code N54) slotted under the long, sculpted clamshell bonnet, producing over 300hp, thanks for the inclusion of two turbochargers.

With a production run spanning from February 2009 through to August 2016 (built in Regensburg, Germany) the Z4 was also available with a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (N20) and a six-cylinder naturally aspirated straight-six (N52), which could either be offered with a displacement of 2.5 litres or 3.0 litres.

Power was always fed to the rear, as has been typical for BMW until more recent years, with the following gearboxes available; 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 8-speed automatic, and a 7-speed DCT. Standard features included BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, such as regenerative braking and electric power steering. Models also feature an electric parking brake, engine start-stop system, directional headlights, and a driving mode selector with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes.

Overview

The example we have for sale is a 2014 version, meaning it’s a facelift, benefitting from updates such as redesigned headlights with LED technology, changes to the interior with black surrounds and higher quality switches, as well as new optional packages. Another option for the facelift was the eye-catching Valencia Orange paintwork, which as you can see, has been applied to this car. Not only is it stunning, but it also makes this version rare as just 264 were finished in this shade worldwide.

As well as having the kind of paint to brighten up the greyest of days, it has some serious performance to go with it. This is the 35i M Sport model, meaning it has the N54 under the bonnet, producing 302hp along with 400Nm of torque, which allows this Bavarian droptop to crack 62mph in a little over 5 seconds – that’s still quick by today’s standards.

Along with the 3.0 litre twin turbo lump at the front of the car and power fed to the rear, in the middle there is a 6-speed manual gearbox for ultimate driver involvement. As this is the M Sport, this version provided 18” alloys, leather upholstery, sports seats, re-designed front and rear bumpers, sports steering wheel as well as sports suspension.

Exterior

As mentioned, this Z4 is finished the show-stopping Valencia Orange, which has also been used on other BMW models such as the iconic 1M. As you can see from the photos, the paint is in very good condition and is bound to look as good on a gloomy day as it does on a sunny one. There are some minor marks on the door mirrors as well as some kerbing on the alloys, but nothing that seriously detracts from the overall package, and these are areas that can easily addressed by the new keeper.

The car features a contrasting black retractable hardtop and silver alloys, to provide a striking design without coming across as too ostentatious – unless you don’t like orange of course! The lights are in great condition, as is the glassware. The retractable hardtop looks to be free of damage and works as it should.

The exterior badges are also in good condition, although the new owner may want to replace the centre caps on the alloys just to help freshen up that area. The iconic BMW ‘Kidney Grilles’ feature a satin and chrome design, and look to be in good condition, helping to compliment the silver on the alloys.

Interior

The orange theme continues on the inside as the leather and alcantara sports seats feature orange stitching along with a very fetching orange stripe running down the centre of the seats flanked by a grey stripe either side. The seats are in great condition, free from any serious wear or rips. Leather is also used for the centre armrest and the steering wheel, both of which are in good condition.

Cow hide makes an appearance on the dashboard as well, and in case there wasn’t enough orange influence, the lower half of the dash has seen splashes of said colour – not that we’re complaining of course! Helping to finish the interior off are black surrounds as well as silver dashboard fascia and colour-appropriate floor mats.

The lever for the 6-speed manual gearbox sits proudly in the middle, telling you that this is a proper driver’s car. Around this area you have the button to turn off the traction control if you’ve had a brave pill (or two) as well as drive modes to change your driving experience. Interior features include dual-zone climate control and a CD player with FM radio, although who needs that when you have a 6-cylinder soundtrack to enjoy?

Mechanical

Powering this Z4 is the N54 engine, which as stated previously is a 3.0 litre twin-turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine, which produces over 300hp – plenty for a nice Sunday cruise in the country. Lift up the beautiful clamshell bonnet and you’ll see the 3.0 litre in all of its glory, and in fine condition. In fact, it’s to be very well kept under the bonnet with original stickers/plaques correct and present.

The car has benefitted from a small service in September and has an MoT, which is also valid until September, giving the new owner one less thing to think about for a few months. The hoses look to be in good condition and the underside of the car is in very good condition, free from rust.

All the suspension arms look to be in good condition as does the exhaust and the undertrays, although the new owner may want to consider changing the tyres as the last MoT has described them as perishing. Other than that advisory, the car is mechanically sound and should prove to be as reliable to own for the next keeper as it is enjoyable to drive.

History

The current vendor has owned the car for around a year after falling in love with the Valencia Orange paintwork. In fact, he wasn’t even looking for a Z4, he saw this in his favourite colour and fell in love. He is looking to move the car on only to make space for a Fisker which is incoming later in the year.

The vendor is keen to say this example has been cherished, and we think the presentation of the car is evidence of that. The car has only had three former keepers, with the current one having owned the car since January 2022. The photos show a registration plate of 3 LLX, although the car has been reverted to the original registration of GY64WDK. The vendor has stated that 3 LLX could be available by separate negotiation, so bear this in mind.

The car has covered just 47,286 miles in its lifespan so it’s pretty low mileage. The MoT history is very encouraging as it’s passed with no advisories more often than not, with the last one only advising perishing tyres. Whilst the current owner has had the car he’s had it MoT’d as well as an interim service, carried out Grays Autocentres in September of last year.

The online service history also shows it was serviced by Barons in 2017, which consisted of a brake fluid change and an MoT, a major service by Vince in 2018, and a small service with air filter replacement, which was carried out by Halfords in 2021. The car comes with original booklets and two keys – there is no service book as it has online service history.

Summary

With spring just around the corner, this could well be a great time to put your money towards a well looked after BMW Z4, which has the power to go with the looks as well as rare paintwork that is hard to find. It could be quite some time until another Valencia Orange example comes up when you bear in mind just 264 were made worldwide, and also one that’s in this condition.

With a pretty clean MoT history, with the current one lasting until September plus a service that isn’t due until that time, either this car is ready to be enjoyed in the forthcoming spring sunshine. The estimate for this car is £15,000-£20,000, but given the rarity of the colour and the condition, you could well have an appreciating modern classic sat on your driveway.
