Like Ural, there was another motorcycle company in the Soviet Union. Like Ural, it would make licensed or inspired versions of large-capacity motorcycles, both for domestic use and markets abroad. Like Ural, it also made many boxer-engined iterations. These were also fitted with a sidecar and were ready to take on the toughest terrains. But they weren't called Ural. They weren't even made in the same plant. These were Dnepr. While Ural continues to sell modern motorcycles and has been popular across the globe, Dnepr no longer exists. But that can hardly cause a dent in the appeal of these Kiev-made motorcycles by Kyivskyi Mototsyklentyi Zavod — that's KMZ/what Dnepr was called before being renamed.

Overview

From the bikes made for the army, civilians, and even international exports (marketed as Cossack in the UK), there would've been a lot to choose from the Dnepr back catalog, if it existed. With Dneprs available as collectible classics, it makes all the right sense to consider these — and not just as an alternative to the Urals. Now available with The Market is a sidecar-equipped Dnepr. The Soviet motorcycle is clearly powered by the larger 750 cc motor and has a later model tank, hinting that it can be the MT-12 (civilian) or MB-750M (army)

Exterior

Better-looking frame, rounded fenders that make Dneprs appear more classic than the Urals, and an overall design that looks just right — not as a BMW clone but as a hard-working, heavy-duty motorcycle. The example here comes with a sidecar, which further enhances the machine's appeal — and uses!

Mechanical

When new, powering the MT-12 was a side-valve 750cc engine that Dnepr had used in other models previously. The sidecar wheel drive version benefitted from a new gearbox that also had a reverse gear.

History

There were two prominent motorcycle companies in the Soviet Union: the IMZ Ural and KMZ. The latter started making Dnepr motorcycles from 1945 or so onwards. It began with a two-stroke Wanderer 98-like motorcycle (reportedly referring to the original blueprint and tools, which were handed over as repatriations) followed by a tricycle for war veterans, and by the beginning of the 50s, they started focusing on large-capacity motorcycles. The MT-12 came about thirty years after KMZ had made their first motorcycle. It was also available with the army as the MB-750M. Odometer shows 2,009 miles.

Summary

Dnepr had some really interesting models and the MT-12 is no different. Enthusiasts love these, with many commending the motorcycles' ability to do absolutely everything that's thrown their way. The appeal doesn't end there, either. With good serviceability, great looks, and a long history, a Dnepr just can't be overlooked. And as a collectible classic, more so! Estimated $2,000 - $5,000.

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'. This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
