Background

After 16 years absent, the M6 makes a comeback in 2005 in the form of the E643/64 chassis using the same S85 V10 engine from the E60 M5. Production for the high-performance version of the 6 series ended after 5 years and just 9087 for the coupe and 5065 for the convertible making this car a bit special.

With the huge V10 powering it, the M6 was no slouch and could easily have been called a sports car, but the idea of the M6 was always to traverse countries quickly with ease whilst lavishing its driver and passengers in complete luxury.

Overview

First registered on the 10th of December 2006, this BMW was supplied new in the UK by BMW Distribution Centre Thorne. The spec of the car is a bit special, being black on black with sapphire black paintwork (code 475) and black Merino leather (code LKSW) with carbon fibre inlay. Adding to the appeal further the specification from factory comes with 19" M single piece light alloy wheels, recently refurbished, diamond cut with ferric grey accents, complete with Z rated tyres and new BMW hardware. The car also comes with:

  • Professional navigation system
  • Adaptive xenon headlamps with high beam assist
  • Heads up display
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Cruise control,
  • Multi-function M leather steering wheel
  • High gloss shadow-line exterior trim
  • Professional hi-fi system with DSP and 6-disc glovebox mounted CD changer and DAB tuner
  • Fully electric front sports seats with M logo embossed to the headrests, both with electric lumbar adjustment, 3x stage heating and memory function to the driver
  • Power folding door mirrors
  • Electrically operated height and rake adjustment to steering column
  • Rain sensitive windscreen and auto on headlamps
  • Front and rear park distance control
  • Push button engine start with 2x remote keys
  • BMW assist with voice control
  • Auto dimming rear view mirrors

This M6 has had the option book thrown at it and it’s clearly been kept in top condition by a careful and loving owner, the car is now presented for auction through a trader who has complete the routine maintenance and other works to bring this car up to the ‘better than new’ condition it is now in. The car has done less than 48500 miles to date which for a car with such an impressive ability as a grand tourer, is really very low indeed. This is backed up by the paperwork however as well as the fantastic condition of the car inside and out.

Exterior

The exterior looks stunning in sapphire black giving the M6 menacing looks on the road, highlighted with the freshly diamond cut refurbished alloys and the chrome accents around the car. As to be expected on a BMW, the fit and finish of the panels and trim pieces is top quality and even 15 years on, this grand touring convertible still presents as a modern, quality product.

The hood is in great condition, matching the rest of the exterior, with the plastics surrounding the cover mechanism being in top condition also. The tonneau cover and wind deflector are in good condition also and work as intended. Also working as intended and in similarly fantastic condition are all the light lenses, with no cracks, scratches, hazing or condensation to be found. There are also very little to no swirl marks, stone chips, scratches or dents on the bodywork anywhere and we suspect the car has had some paint treatment such as a cut and polish recently to get it in such fantastic condition.

Interior

The black on black is perhaps the best combination of colours for this car and indeed a lot of BMWs, its easily the most elegant and wide-ranging choice for several different tastes, you just can’t go wrong with a black-on-black car. The leather inside looks to be in amazing condition with no marks, rips or tears anywhere to be found. The lumbar supports on the seats also look to be in good condition as well with plenty of life left.

Another very desirable option the previous owner took from factory, was the carbon fibre inlay around the car, specifically the dash and centre console. This adds a hint of sporting feel to the car in the cabin, beside the noise of the engine once you put your foot on the accelerator and get pushed back into the plush leather M sport seats.

To further consolidate the mileage, the wear and tear in the cabin is very minimal with all major touch points being in fantastic condition, with no cracking of the leather, no knicks or rips, very little scratches, if any at all, and no fraying of stitching. The inside of this BMW is in fantastic condition and must be a major plus when looking for one of these cars, this is in the right colour combination with very little wear and tear, ready to be enjoyed by the new owner.

Mechanical

Much the same as the topside of this BMW, the underside is in equally good condition, despite the harsh conditions on our salted roads in the UK, the BMW shows no signs of having anything other than a tight, well sorted chassis. All rubber components look to have lots of life left in them, all suspension components look to be in good condition as well as all the structural bracing often needed on convertible cars, all looking to be in fine structural condition.

There is no rust to be seen at all under the car with much of the plastic coverings doing their job and protecting the main components of the car. The underseal is still intact and there are no signs of any jacking removing any areas of underseal as can be the case sometimes. There are unlikely to be any nasty surprises lurking under here and with the care and level of build quality coming from BMW on this once flagship model, you can rest assured that the underside of this car will not need any attention anytime soon.

Summary

Buying an M6 new was always going to be a financial liability with the depreciation associated with it, which means that now is the best time to buy one of these cars as they are starting to make their way back up in price on the market. This one is an extremely good example with everything you need to just get in and enjoy driving.

Being the flagship model at the time, BMW saw fit to endow the car with lots of modern tech and luxury creature comforts, allowing this car to still be up to date with the current market whilst not costing you and arm and a leg.

This is still a very powerful, capable, good looking, luxury continent busting grand tourer in perhaps the best spec and colour combination and for this price range, it’s an absolute bargain.

Our estimate for this car is £18,000 - £22,000.
