2015 BMW M5

Finished in Sapphire Black Metallic with a contrasting Silverstone 2 Merino leather interior, the S63 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine and seven-speed DCT flappy paddle gearbox mean M5 blends performance and luxury better than almost anything else you can buy for the same money.

Because it’s really rather lovely, isn’t it? Blending menace and subtlety rather nicely (just look at slide #2, for example; our tame photographer earned his skinny, de-caf, caramel latte with that shot, didn’t he?), this one boasts consistent and tight shutlines, no ripples, dents, or dinks to the panels, and a lovely finish to the Sapphire Black Metallic paintwork.

It’s also beautifully detailed with little chunks of gorgeousness like the side repeater lamp that’s not only integrated into an air vent but also features an ‘M5’ badge. This is a very nicely executed design.

The sunroof works as it should too, opening and closing at the touch of a button and sealing tightly.

The rims are black 20-inch 343M alloys jobbies fitted with recent matching Michelin tyres.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

Oh, and the blue brake calipers make a nice change, don’t they?

And that’s your lot, really. Apart from the usual stonechips every car collects over the years, it’s still utterly magnificent.

In stark contrast to most BMWs of this era, this interior is light and airy and a million miles away from the ‘coal mine’ gloom you usually see thanks to that gorgeous Silverstone 2 Merino leather trim.

It’s all in fine fettle too, but then this is a seven-year-old car that’s seen only careful use over fewer than 54,000 miles, so we haven’t got much to say about it. Heck, even the (almost white) leather seats are just about pristine, and that’s no small thing.

The front ones are electrically controlled and heated as well, and the adjustable lumbar and under-thigh support they offer help make long journeys a breeze. The rear seats are even better and they even get their own controls for the air-conditioning.

The boot is as good as everywhere else and is home to the tool kit, warning triangle, and tyre compressor.

As for the toys you’ve got to play with, all we can say is that the options list took a beating because it’s fitted with:

As you can see – and would expect – its starts on the button, revs and ticks over nicely, and the dashboard is free of warning lights. Can’t ask for more really, can you?

It also drives as it should - and the exhaust makes a helluva noise, doesn’t it?

The engine bay is very good but then that’s what you get when you fork out for BMW to look after it every year.

The underside is excellent as well. But then you’d guessed that by now, hadn’t you?

The M5’s MoT certificate is valid until May 2023 and it was gained, like every single one it’s ever taken, with no advisories.

Its last service was on the 23rd of August 2021 at 47,958 miles, so the next one is due in approximately seven thousand miles.
