Background

With its 3.2-litre S54 engine, addictive exhaust note and intake noise and fantastic performance, it’s no wonder that for many of us, the E46 is the ‘definitive’ BMW M3 model.

Launched all the way back in 1997, the sleek lines of the E46 have aged fantastically well, and it’s hard to believe it is only one generation newer than the squared-off E36 model, and has arguably aged better than many of its contemporaries from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Audi.

Part of the E46’s appeal is undoubtedly the performance and noise offered by the S54 engine, thanks to BMW’s M-division utilising six individual throttle bodies, but also VANOS, with the engine putting out an impressive - and somewhat addicting - kick of power further up the rev range, and happily singing all the way to the redline.

It wasn’t just about performance for the E46, however. The interior was typically high-class and screwed together very well which was typical of BMW in the late 90’s / early 2000’s era, it could comfortably carry four passengers with space for a fifth, and it was filled with plenty of comfort-focused technology such as adjustable pneumatic side bolsters in the front seats, electric rear pop-out windows and other creature comforts.

The E46 M3 really was a car that can ‘do it all’ especially in standard form, whilst for hardcore enthusiasts and drivers there was the CS and latterly the CSL models, which stripped a lot of the comfort (and manual transmission for the CSL) out of the car in the pursuit of all-out performance.

Overview

Purchased by our vendor - the seventh owner - in July 2020 as part of their growing personal collection of high-end performance cars, this E46 M3 is finished in the attractive shade of Mystic Blue over a black leather interior and presents fantastically throughout, as well as boasting a handful of attractive upgrades.

From the factory, this was a well-specified example, featuring a black Nappa leather interior, power folding mirrors, electric glass sunroof, ‘professional’ BMW navigation system, bluetooth telephone connectivity, Harman Kardon sound system, cruise control, heated memory seats, and high-gloss ‘shadow line’ trim. Previous owners have further built upon this impressive spec with the fitment of genuine AC Schnitzer back boxes in 2004, a set of genuine BBS CH Motorsport wheels and upgraded ‘Angel Eye’ headlights which not only transform the front of the car, but also make night driving a far more pleasant experience.

BMW enthusiasts ‘in the known’ will no doubt be pleased to hear that the BMW Airbag recall work was recently carried out, and a recent rear subframe and VANOS check during the recent MOT showed up no untoward problems.

As our vendor states, this is an E46 that’s ready to simply jump in and enjoy, or perhaps fettle with lightly and tuck it away for a few years - the choice is yours!

Exterior

As you’d expect from a car with over 55,000 miles on the odometer, there are a few light marks such as stone chips noted to the bodywork of this M3, though that really is about the limit of it.

There are no scuffs, notable scratches or major gravel rash, nor are there any noticeable dents or known impact damage to the vehicle, with the panel gaps remaining impressively tight and even - testament to BMW’s build quality.

The Mystic Blue paintwork remains in fantastic condition throughout, whilst all of the glass and light lenses are free from damage. The rear pop-out windows function perfectly and create a reassuringly tight seal when closed, whilst the sunroof is also in fully working order with no hesitation or untoward noises when in use.

At the rear, the AC Schnitzer back boxes are still in excellent shape with an impressive shine to the tips, and add a wonderful extra level of bass to the car’s exhaust note at idle and low RPM without sounding tacky, whilst retaining the characteristic bark of the S54 engine at higher RPM.

Finally, the upgraded BBC CH wheels suit the car well and look excellent from a distance, but up close you’ll notice a few kerb grazes and more noticeable marks. Given the rest of the car’s excellent condition, we’d suggest having the wheels refurbished to bring them back to their best, but they are perfectly usable as they sit.

Interior

The interior of this 57,000 miles E46 coupé has aged very well indeed and stood up to the test of time well, largely thanks to the lack of screens and infotainment software that often dates cars from this era.

Oh, and there’s three pedals - a must for any serious driving enthusiast!

The condition of the cabin is fantastic throughout, and needs to be seen to be believed. The front seats are still in excellent shape with only light wear and creasing commensurate with the car’s age and mileage, whilst the rear seats are in even better shape with minimal wear.

The headliner shows no signs of sagging or notable staining, and the carpets are also in great shape. The high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel and gearstick show some light usage marks and typical wear, along with the door cards having the odd indentation here-and-there.

As we’ve already mentioned, the sunroof and electric windows are all working perfectly, and as far as we could tell the situation was the same for the rest of the car, even down to the pneumatically-adjustable side bolsters on the front seats, with no noted issues or leaks.

Mechanical

Looking underneath the car, the chassis and suspension look to be in good order, with only the usual ‘bloom’ of surface corrosion noted on exposed elements such as the exhaust system in places and the suspension wishbones.

Importantly, the arches all looked to be in lovely, solid condition, as did the boot floor from both inside and outside. The latest MOT did note surface corrosion to the rear brake pipes, a cracked exhaust bracket and a minor brake vibration on the MOT rollers. The exhaust bracket has not caused any damage to the exhaust and with another two clamps remaining the exhaust is still nice and secure.

During our test drive, the car started with an impressive vigour and settled into a butter-smooth idle as you’d expect from a BMW-engineered straight-six engine. At low speeds the car is easy to drive with an impressively engaging clutch and gearbox action, and at higher RPMs the characteristic intake howl and exhaust note were present for all to enjoy.

On the road, we noted no untoward noises, behaviours or issues, and the car was perfectly happy sitting and idling for extended periods of time, as well as dealing with repeated starts even when hot.

History

The history folder of this M3 stretches all the way back to the original purchase invoice for the car, including every MOT certificate and tax disc ever issued. There is also three sets of keys, the full complement of OEM BMW handbooks and manuals, owners wallet, and V5 keeper document showing six prior owners.

We feel it is important to note that there is a slight mileage discrepancy during the second MOT in 2007, where the MOT tester accidentally added 157,000 miles to the reading by pressing the ‘2’ on the keyboard twice (resulting in a recorded mileage of 174,223) but this was corrected for the next year and as you can see, the odometer reading is genuine as evidenced by the rest of the MOT mileage readings and service records from throughout the car’s history.

Digging deeper, there are absolutely stacks of invoices and receipts from work carried out to the car over the years, including the most recent service in September 2020 at 56,903 miles. Prior to this, a major ‘Inspection II’ service was performed by independant specialist JF Autotech in September 2017 at 46,343 miles including gearbox and rear axle oil changes, new coil springs, air-conditioning service and new belt, new front pads, brake fluid change and a new rear view mirror.

With an up-to-date service record and hoards of invoices, one thing is clear - this is an E46 that has been owned by several fastidious keepers in its lifetime, and tracing the history of the car is fascinating.

Summary

Having been dry-stored, cherished and fettled throughout our vendor’s ownership, this E46 M3 has brought plenty of joy to both the owner and their family, with the car being taken to numerous events such as the high-profile ‘Scramble’ at Bicester Heritage, along with other family-friendly car shows.

Presented in outstanding condition and with a recent service - along with any recall work carried out and a clear VANOS health check - this E46 M3 is an excellent example of the increasingly desirable manual coupé. Wonderful throughout and an absolute joy to drive, we estimate this 2003 BMW M3 to reach in the region of £19,000 to £27,000 when the hammer falls.
