Background

The original E31 8-series which spanned the 1990s, was the most ambitious car BMW had launched since the mid-engined M1. It was also far costlier to develop (not far off a billion US dollars) and a much more significant model for BMW’s future, as it represented a first attempt to take the company’s flagship coupé a long way upmarket. Compared with the old 6-series, the 8-series was a quantum leap forward. Silky-smooth V8 (840Ci) and V12 (850i) engines replaced the old straight-six while the design was packed with cutting-edge features: a drive-by-wire throttle, multi-link rear suspension, CAD-modelled structure and aerodynamics. Unhappily for this rather expensive and advanced car, it was launched into the teeth of a global recession that hit just a year after the first 850i was sold in 1990. BMW persevered with the model but sales never took off and the 8-series remains a relatively rare breed and in such a rarefied price bracket (think £70,000, 25 years ago) . Pillarless looks are achieved at the touch of a button and the interior design – now 30 years old – has a kind of retro-futurism that’s deeply exciting to anyone who admired them from afar in the 1990s.

Overview

This 850 has an interesting story, originally sold by Park Lane BMW in Brentford, Middlesex in January 1991 and it was cared for by BMW main dealers, then marque specialists for a number of years and in regular use until around 2007 - its last MOT of the period expiring mid 2008 - when it was parked and left for a decade, becoming almost a barn find in 2017!

It was bought by Adam Franek, a BMW specialist and restorer who went through the car top to bottom and bumper to bumper servicing the car and replacing any part the needed to be, including the fuel pump and fitting a stainless steel 3.5” exhaust back box (which sounds terrific) and undertaking a full glass out respray in 2017 ( please see the images in the picture gallery ).

He kept the BMW as his daily driver until January 2019, covering 10,000 miles in the car when he sold it to the current owner, who has continued to lavish care on the 840.

Owning a number of cars, he has not had time to drive this much and so has decided to part with it.

Exterior

The exterior of the car is superb. As part of the recommissioning process the car was treated to a glass out full respray in 2017 the result if which looks excellent. The panels are unblemished and the panel gaps are nice and even, while the Mauritius Blue metallic paint is excellent with just the expected stone chips around the car, mostly across the nose.

Highlights of the model are the pop up headlights, which operate just as they should, and the frameless front windows which with the rear glass, drop down to give a full length frameless side area.

The alloy wheels are in very good shape with virtually no marks to be found, and wearing new Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all round. The light lenses are bight and clear, the front badge is very good however the rear BMW roundel has a chip in the enamel.

Interior

The interior feels very special in a very ‘90s high tech way. The blue leather seats are in very nice condition with a little patina on the surface and just a small area of wear on the drivers bolster and the blue carpets have very little wear and no marks, having been protected by factory floor mats.

The door cards and dash are matching blue and in excellent shape, and being so high spec there are multitude of luxuries and toys, and being a car of the 1990s there is an easy to reach button for everything, and it all feels solid and well very well built.

Mechanical

Under the car the clean underseal is visible, having been cleaned, inspected and treated by Kent Hugh Performance Cars in 2019 and new metal brake lines are visible running to the back of the car.

Under the bonnet the engine and its bay are very clean with no signs of leaks or damage to the inner wings of slam panel.

The engine fires up easily, and idles and revs smoothly, while the automatic gearbox selects drive and reverse correctly. The owner tells us the BMW drives well.

History

Since 2017 the car has had a large amount of recommissioning and maintenance work done, first to get it back on the road after a 10 year lay up, then in the current owners care to maintain and continue to improve the 850. There is now a thick wad of receipts for parts in the history folder detailing the expense that has brought the car to the superb condition we now find it in.

The respray in 2017 looks superb and recent work includes visits to classic BMW specialists Munich Legends to rectify several electric issues including the dashboard illumination, dashboard circuits and electric seat operation, a total of £1600, and Kent High Performance Cars have serviced it as required as well as in 2019 replacing hard brake pipes and fuel lines, re-bushing the rear suspension, replaced the air conditioning condenser and clean and underseal the underside of the car also in 2020 they replaced all the flexible brake pipes. In addition the car has had four new tyes fitted in June 2022.

Summary

Having been carefully looked after by three experts - Adam Franek, Munich Legends and Kent High Performance Cars - almost every foible of this 90s supercar have been taken care of.

The condition is excellent with great paint, superb panels and a lovely interior the car looks stunning, and we are told drives as well as it looks.

Please note the number plate JIW 181 is not sold with the car but available by separate negotiation with the vendor and the new registartion number is H69 ARR.

We estimate this vehicle to reach between £14,000 - £16,000 in auction.
