Background

As cool coupes go, the BMW 8 Series is right up there with the best. Built by BMW from 1990 to 1999, the car still has the ability to turn heads.

The E24 6 Series had done sterling work for many a year, though the company points out that the 8 Series was not developed as a successor. We beg to disagree!

The substantially higher price was probably more to the point, though performance did step up a notch.

The car debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989 to much acclaim, the sleek looks wowing a discerning audience. You see, wind tunnel testing had resulted in a car with a low drag coefficient of just 0.29, a massive improvement over say, a 635CSI.

If we told you that over 1.5 billion Deutsche Marks was spent on the car’s total development, you get some idea of the lofty ambitions for the car.

Other notable 8-Series facts…

*First V12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission on a road car

*One of the first cars to be fitted with an electronic drive-by-wire throttle

*One of the first BMWs to use a multi-link rear axle

Oh, and the car was considerably heavier than its predecessor. Blame the generous level of standard equipment, the weight of the V12 engine and the strengthening required to create the full pillarless look.

1993 saw the introduction of the 840Ci, powered by a 282hp V8. The only external features distinguishing the V8 model from the V12 were the quad round exhausts, which were square on the V12 models. The 840Ci stayed in production until May 1999.

There’s no doubt sales of the 8-Series were affected by the global recession in the early ‘90s, the Gulf War and the spike in energy prices. It means that the cars are rare and good ones are extremely sought after.

Overview

If you are going to spec an 840Ci, then Avus Blue with contrasting cream leather is undoubtedly the way to go – a lovely colour combination.

Our car has undoubtedly led a busy life, covering over 200,000 miles in its 27-year life. These cars are well made and cope very easily with mega miles – quality German engineering.

Our seller bought the car some six years ago and since then has lavished care and attention on his pride and joy, and quite a lot of cash! He tells us that close to £20,000 has been spent on the car, the biggest items being the full body respray and complete interior retrim.

As such, the 840 now defies its years and is now ready for new adventures.

Our seller reports that the car drives superbly, shifting cleanly through the gears. It’s a magnificent cruiser as one would expect but can play the role of sports car rather well when the driver is in the mood. And of course, there is plenty of room for three passengers to come along for the ride.

Equipment count is high, no surprises there. Expect to find air conditioning, sunroof, full leather seats with electric adjustment, cruise control and an excellent sound system.

Exterior

In July of this year, the 840 was treated to a full respray. There are some pictures of the car in the midst of all the work.

The results are impressive, the finished car being fully returned to its former glory. The sprayer clearly was a craftsman and we very much approve of his work. Any bodywork issues were comprehensively addressed at the time.

The pop-up headlights do just that and there’s that electric sunroof for those days when you crave that wind in the hair feeling.

The alloy wheels are in good order and each is shod with a premium Falken tyre, all with plenty of tread. Good tyres generally point to caring and considered classic car ownership.

The windscreen wiper arms have been converted to take normal Bosch blades, the original ones being retained if required.

Interior

One of the undoubted highlights of this car is the interior. Our seller had it fully restored in 2016. Seats, door cards, knee bolsters etc were replaced and the upgraded CSI door cards were fitted.

The cream leather contrasts beautifully with the exterior blue, the matching blue piping a lovely touch.

The front seats are fully electric, so that perfect driving position is easy to attain. We do note some marks to the driver’s seat cushion, though it is possible that this may be improved with some gentle cleaning.

There are some marks to the backs of the front seats, no doubt from rear passengers clambering in and out. The gear knob is loose and slides off if you pull it up.

Carpets, mats and headlining all look to be perfectly fine and have stood the test of time well.

The generous sized boot houses a full-size spare under the floor. Plenty of room for luggage for that continental touring holiday.

As is the BMW way, the tool kit is well sighted on the boot lid, and all appears to be present and correct.

Mechanical

We always include plenty of photographs of a car’s underside, so take some time to examine them. We would be inclined to get the car up on a ramp, give it all a good clean and apply a good coat of undercoat to a few areas which are starting to show signs of corrosion. Prevention is undoubtedly better than cure.

You will also be able to admire the magna flow stainless steel exhaust which sounds lovely but is not too loud. There is also the fully rebuilt suspension to cast a beady eye over.

Lift the bonnet and that powerful, yet refined V8 engine is a joy to behold. It all looks to be in decent condition, save for a bit of work paint near the dipstick.

History

We always like to see an original service book with plenty of stamps and that is certainly the case here. In addition, there is a raft of paperwork which helps to chart what work has been done to the car over the years.

The owner’s handbook is also present and correct as well as the registration document which records just 3 registered keepers before our seller.

As we have already mentioned, our conscientious seller lavished a not inconsiderable sum on repairs, maintenance and improvements during his ownership.

Other than the full respray and interior retrim, work done includes new fuel pipes and starter motor, replacement of timing chain tensioners, new air conditioning condenser and a new radiator. There’s much more, so make a cup of tea and sit down and wade through the paperwork for chapter and verse.

The 840 was last MoTed in March of this year and looking at the history, it confirms that the car has done around 6,000 lovely miles during our seller’s ownership. He enjoyed every one!

We do note that the key fob can be a little temperamental, working best when pointed at an exact spot on the rear-view mirror.

Summary

BMW still makes luxurious coupes, but the modern rather in-your-face design language is not to everyone’s taste.

This delightful 840Ci harks back to a gentler time, where money and good taste went hand in hand.

A head-turning car in the day, and even more so now, this rare car is ready for exciting new adventures, so we would suggest you get bidding without delay. These cars don’t come up for sale very often and this one has been truly pampered in latter years.

We estimate the car will sell for between £8,000 and £13,000.
