“ Incredibly Rare - One of 38 In Dakar Yellow - Stunning ”

The 840Ci is one of BMW’s fantastic coupés, instantly recognisable thanks to the superb styling. Let’s face it, what is there not to love? It's a pillarless coupé with pop-up headlights, flared arches, and the iconic shark nose front, and finishing it off, it's said to be 1 of 38 covered in Dakar Yellow paint. So, all in all, it is pretty much perfect for anyone whos looking for a luxurious coupé.

We estimate this 1998 BMW 840Ci Sport Individual to reach between £20,000 - £25,000.

Background

The original E31 8-series which spanned the 1990s, was the most ambitious car BMW had launched since the mid-engined M1. It was also far costlier to develop (not far off a billion US dollars) and a much more significant model for BMW’s future, as it represented a first attempt to take the company’s flagship coupé a long way upmarket.

Compared with the old 6-series, the 8-series was a quantum leap forward. Silky-smooth V8 (840Ci) and V12 (850i) engines replaced the old straight-six while the design was packed with cutting-edge features: a drive-by-wire throttle, multi-link rear suspension, CAD-modelled structure and aerodynamics.

Unhappily for this rather expensive and advanced car, it was launched into the teeth of a global recession that hit just a year after the first 850i was sold in 1990. BMW persevered with the model, but sales never took off, and the 8-series remains a relatively rare breed.

The 840’s V8 gained another 400cc in mid-1995 without an increase to its 286 PS but with greater efficiency and a slightly higher 420Nm of torque. It was available with either a 5-speed automatic transmission or, optionally, a 6-speed manual.

In such a rarefied price bracket (think £70,000, 25 years ago), it fell between two stools: more compact and less spacious than the big Mercedes CL coupé, less of a sports car than a Porsche 911. Pillarless looks are achieved at the touch of a button, and the interior design – now 30 years old – has a kind of retro-futurism that’s deeply exciting to anyone who admired them from afar in the 1990s.

Overview

With only a reported 38 BMW 840s finished in the beautiful individual colour of Dakar Yellow, this is quite a rare find and a desirable choice for any BMW enthusiast looking for something that little bit unique.

The recommissioning process started in November 2021, after being in storage since early 2008. The vendor purchased the car several years ago and kept it in storage until 2021, when the recommissioning work was started. The vendor has used it very little since it was back on the road, covering approximately 300 miles.

With such little time to fully enjoy the 840, it is now being offered for sale, and the new custodian will hopefully make more use of the 90s classic coupé.

Exterior

Finished in Dakar Yellow, this was an individual colour option for the 840. The paintwork presents really well, and there are very few noticeable stone chips to the front end. This is due to the bumpers and some other scuffs being repainted in November 2021, which were picked up while the car was in storage.

The distinctive shark nose front end is in nice condition, and there are no chips to the lights. In true 90s style, the pop-up headlights are working correctly and again; there is no damage to the lights.

Looking down the long flanks of the 840, the panel gaps look to be equal and matching, and there are no noticeable dings or dents to point out. The windows look in good condition with no apparent scratches. There are minimal signs of delamination to the corners of the front and rear screens. The window seals are in good order and show no signs of shrinkage.

The rear is enhanced with a factory-fitted boot spoiler which is part of the M Aerodynamics package and is in good condition. The contrasting all-red rear lights give the 840 a clean and modern look against the Dakar Yellow.

The aftermarket alloy wheels are in very good condition; there is a small amount of white worm under the lacquer of the deep dish rims, but this is minimal. The tyres are a matching set of Falken’s, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Inside the luxury coupé, black leather with yellow piping to match the exterior was the choice of trim. The condition of the seats is excellent, with no real signs of wear in the usual places such as the driver’s bolster, and they function correctly on the electric side of things. The door cards are in equally good condition with no damage or scuffs. The rear two seats don’t appear to have seen a great deal of use in the past. There is also an electric rear blind which operates correctly.

The dashboard has a Burr walnut trim that looks in good condition with no splits to the lacquer. The instruments work correctly, no warning lights are displayed when the car is running, and the odometer shows a reading of 82,821 miles. The audio has been upgraded for your in-car entertainment with a period-looking Blaupunkt head unit. This will connect to a mobile phone for music streaming. The steering wheel looks to be in good condition with no signs of excessive use. The centre console area matches the fascia with the wood trim; this has minor signs of use around some of the buttons, but this looks in keeping with the car's age.

The carpets in the cabin are in excellent condition, as is the one in the boot. Inside the boot, there is a Pioneer and BMW multi-changer fitted. These have not been tested with the new Blaupunkt head unit, not that it is an issue, as you can stream music from your phone. The boot lid has the factory-mounted tool kit, which is present and correct.

Mechanical

The 840 CI is fitted with BMW’s glorious M62 4.4 litre V8 engine, producing 282 bhp and 325 ft-lb torque, mated to the 5-speed automatic gearbox. The engine bay is well presented; there is a layer of dust, but there are no signs of any leaks that we could see. The car was given a recommissioning service in June 2022 to ensure everything was in good order and to address any issues.

The 840Ci fires up without hesitation, and no untoward noises come from the engine or transmission. The V8 pulls strongly through the gears, which have a smooth change going up and down.

Approximately 100 miles ago, new ball joints, bushes and anti-roll bar link rods were fitted as an MoT repair, meaning there are now no issues with the suspension.

The underside looks in good order, with just a small amount of surface corrosion to some of the suspension arms and subframe; the floor looks nice and clean all over.

History

Unfortunately, there isn't a significant amount of paperwork with the car, as this has disappeared over the time it's been in storage. The vendor states the vehicle was in attendance for servicing at BMW dealerships every year up until storage, and this can be reflected by corespondance with BMW UK in the cars history file. However, the owner's handbook is present, together with the V5C, which shows just two previous keepers.

The most recent paperwork shows the recommissioning service and the work for the suspension bushes totalling £1,100. There is also the invoice for the paintwork, which was another £2,000, bringing it to over £3,000 spent on recommissioning work. The MoT is valid until the 11th of May 2024, and no advisories were issued after the relevant work was carried out. The invoice and instructions for the period-looking DAB Blaupunkt head unit are included, and this was only installed in August 2022.
