Background

The BMW E31 840ci Sport is a spectacular V8 grand tourer designed for suave business executives to drive into the office on the weekday then drive to the alps for a skiing blowout on the weekend. It was more than capable of that too with its 4.4L petrol engine, which is the unit that was used in the E39 M5, albeit given a more sensible tune, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Now considered a modern classic, it’s looks have aged beautifully, giving it the classic BMW style so many love with a touch of modernity that doesn’t look out of place on the road today. The 8 series was an entirely new model for BMW, aimed at a different market, with a much higher price and performance, it was placed above the 6 series in the BMW line up. The focus was on both driving feel and pleasure but arguably more on style, with the pillarless hardtop body style, a large engine and several luxury items.

Overview

This BMW comes up for sale by a classic car dealership, with plenty of knowledge and expertise in the trade this BMW comes with a certain assumption that it’s been looked after. To further evidence that notion, the car comes with lots of history in the sale and comes with a long MoT expiring in 12th July 2022. Before coming into the dealership, the BMW has enjoyed the care of a very few owners who clearly had other cars take care of the daily commute as this 840ci has barely been broken with only 63,600 miles at the date of last MoT.

The BMW is the more desired ‘Sport’ model trim which means it comes with several features over the standard trim level. Being a 1999 year car means that it has the larger 4.4L M62B44 V8 engine putting out approximately 282 BHP and 310 lb ft torque when new.

Exterior

The clean Artic silver paintwork suits this businessman’s cruiser with sterile, precise accents for the profile of the sleek 8 series. In the cool evening light, this colour really pops highlighting the curves and lines of the 840ci’s haunches. Apart from this, there is barely a scratch or scuff on the car with the front bumper looking near immaculate. This should be no surprise from a car with this few miles and it goes to show just how much care this car has received during its life.

The original 16” ‘cross spoke’ alloy wheels are also in fantastic condition, in matching silver colour. There is a very small section of lacquer lift on one of the faces of the wheels but for a 22-year-old wheel they polish up very well.

Interior

The condition of the interior of the BMW matches the exterior in the fact that it has been well looked after and cared for with very minimal wear and tear, the only area that came to light upon inspection was the seatbelt holder on the driver’s side that has some minimal scratches. The rest of the high traffic areas such as the gear-lever, door sills, steering wheel and centre console all look to be near showroom condition, including the quintessentially 90’s phone holder to the side of the gear lever, images come to mind of Nokia 3210’s chiming alerts to CEO’s. The leather trim also has no rips, tears, scuffs or discolouration.

The first aid bag is still in its packaging in the rear centre console presumably still in original condition. The roof lining does appear to have some sagging material, an all too familiar issue on BMWs of this generation, however we can’t imagine this would be a difficult or expensive fix.

Inside the boot, the carpet is in good condition, with the 6 CD changer and spare wheel also looking to be in good condition also.

Mechanical

The underside of the BMW doesn’t seem to have anything untoward to show, the underside looks very clean considering the 22-year-old age of the car, with very little rust and no damage at all.

This is backed up by the most recent MoT which could only find fault underneath with the ball joint dust cover needing to be replaced and the front wheel bearing.

The new owner might want to consider the replacement of rubber bushings under the car if they have not been replaced recently to tighten up the chassis to ensure maximum enjoyment from the car’s road-holding ability.

History

The stack of history shows plenty of MoT certificates and various service receipts for regular maintenance over the years which shows the car was cared for in a meticulous fashion.

The history file also comes with SORN certificates evidencing the car’s off-road status. The V5 and a clear HPI check are also present.

Summary

The 840ci is described as an everyman’s super-luxury GT cruiser but has set a reputation for future BMW 8 series as top-notch luxury grand touring saloons on a par with some more prestigious brands. The 840ci was a head turner back in the day and is even more so now with its late 90’s styling both managing to fit into the modern design language of today whilst also standing out with its BMW design cues.

This example shows strong evidence of having been cared for, with a good amount of history on file. It runs and drives well and has low miles and if that doesn’t sway you then we just have three words…pop up headlights.

Our estimate for this car is £11,500 - £16,000.
