Background
The E63/64 BMW 6 Series was in production between 2003 and 2010. Offered as a coupé or convertible, it utilised a shortened E60 5 Series chassis as a base for the Chris Bangle-influenced design.
With its infamous ‘Bangle Butt’ rear end, the 6 Series’ weight was kept low thanks to aluminium doors and bonnet, with the boot and front wings being made of carbon-reinforced plastic to the same ends.
The 6-Series is available with a wide range of engines from the parsimonious 282bhp diesel through to a 4.8-litre V8 petrol with 367bhp under its belt – and if the latter isn’t quick enough for you then the M6 arrived (sideways, and in a cloud of tyre smoke) in 2006.
Sporting a 500bhp, 5.0-litre petrol V10, a seven-speed SMGIII automated manual gearbox, and a carbonfibre roof, the M6 can streak to 62mph in 4.6 seconds and go on to a top speed of up to 190mph.
The model you’re looking at here is a 2006 650i, which means 367bhp, 361lb/ft of torque and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. Electronically limited to 155mph, it returns up to 25mpg, which means it balances the needs of the enthusiastic but environmentally conscious driver better than most.
