Background

The E63/64 BMW 6 Series was in production between 2003 and 2010. Offered as a coupé or convertible, it utilised a shortened E60 5 Series chassis as a base for the Chris Bangle-influenced design.

With its infamous ‘Bangle Butt’ rear end, the 6 Series’ weight was kept low thanks to aluminium doors and bonnet, with the boot and front wings being made of carbon-reinforced plastic to the same ends.

The 6-Series is available with a wide range of engines from the parsimonious 282bhp diesel through to a 4.8-litre V8 petrol with 367bhp under its belt – and if the latter isn’t quick enough for you then the M6 arrived (sideways, and in a cloud of tyre smoke) in 2006.

Sporting a 500bhp, 5.0-litre petrol V10, a seven-speed SMGIII automated manual gearbox, and a carbonfibre roof, the M6 can streak to 62mph in 4.6 seconds and go on to a top speed of up to 190mph.

The model you’re looking at here is a 2006 650i, which means 367bhp, 361lb/ft of torque and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. Electronically limited to 155mph, it returns up to 25mpg, which means it balances the needs of the enthusiastic but environmentally conscious driver better than most.

Overview

First registered on the 6th of June 2006 and MOT’d until April 2023, this lovely BMW 650i Sport Convertible is finished in an attractive silvery-blue metallic with a tan leather interior.

Sporting an automatic gearbox and a personalised numberplate, the fact that it’s a Sport model means it also comes with unique 19-inch alloy wheels, an M-Sport steering wheel, sports seats, an anthracite headlining, and birchwood trim.

Being offered with no reserve, this is your chance to get your hands on what might just be a very cheap way to enjoy the last of the summer sun – and if we can expect more 40C summers in the future, there are few better ways to soak up the sun that in one of these!

Exterior

The 6 Series’ build quality is evident here; with just over 80,000 miles on the clock this 16-year-old car could be mistaken for a car half its age. With mm-perfect shutlines and no ripples or other signs of abuse or neglect, it presents very well indeed.

As you’d expect from a car of this quality, the black folding roof furls and unfurls as it should at the touch of a button. It also seals well and is in great shape with no damage. The vertical rear screen (of which more anon) means the folding roof structure forms a pair of XJS-style rear buttresses, which we love.

The 19-inch multispoke alloy wheels are in decent shape and have good tyres, which the vendor believes are “run flats” although they don’t match. The car also has a spare wheel, included in the sale.

Flaws? Well, there are, of course, then usual stonechips and marks every car inevitably collects over the years but they’re entirely consistent with its age and mileage and are nothing to worry about.

However, you might like to sort out the bubbling on the door mirror surrounds (#61). There is also some scuffing to the offside door (#71) and the plastic tonneau cover is a little sun-faded (#256).

Interior

The cream leather interior makes the 650i a lovely place to be. With four firm but comfortable seats and that wonderful convertible roof, there are few finer ways to take three of your mates out for a high-speed run in the sun.

It’s still in great shape, too with gentle creasing to the outside edge of the driver’s seat being the only obvious sign of the car’s age. The two front seats are heated and electrically adjustable, and they fold forward at the touch of a button to give good access to the rear. All four give great lateral support, which is a bloomin’ good thing given the 650i’s performance potential.

It’s stuffed to the gunnels with toys, too including the vertical rear glass screen, which acts as a natty glass wind deflector to keep your hair unruffled even at interstellar speeds. It drops completely when you lower the roof but then pops up again halfway automatically. It’s a great design and obviously gives much better rearwards visibility than a mesh deflector ever could.

The boot is shallow but deep thanks to the need to accommodate the folding roof mechanism but it’s in good order with only minimal signs of wear.

Faults? Well, the front seatbelts are a bit grubby but that aside it all looks good in there.

Mechanical

The engine is a helluva unit, throaty and powerful and economical enough (with a light right foot, obviously…) to be used as a daily driver. The automatic gearbox means it’s easy to drive in heavy traffic, while pressing the ‘Sport’ button sharpens things up enough to make the 650i genuinely good to drive along twisty country lanes: “excellent handling of the goes-where-it's-pointed variety” as one contemporary road tester put it.

The engine bay looks good but would benefit from a light valet to bring it up to the sort of condition we can see it could be in. The underside looks good.

History

There are old MOT certificates as well as a number of invoices and bills for work that’s been carried out on the BMW over the years.

Importantly, the service history booklet and service printout show the following work having been carried out:

· 13.06.2006 – pre-delivery inspection by Westerly Yeovil

· 04.06.2007 and 13,105 miles – service by Cooper Tunbridge Wells

· 13.05.2008 and 24,116 miles – service by Cooper Tunbridge Wells

· 03.03.2010 and 37,962 miles – service by Berry Chiswick

· 01.09.2011 and 53,354 miles – service by Servicing Stop

· 13.09.2012 and 57,739 miles – service by Vines Gatwick

· 04.05.2022 and 83,682 miles – service by Keith Motors of Christchurch

The BMW comes with two key fobs.

Summary

The BMW’s guide price of somewhere between £7,000 and £10,000 seems like outstanding value to us considering what’s on offer; with 367bhp, a sub-six-second benchmark dash and up to 25mpg, this is a sporting convertible that’s fit for every role and season.

Better yet, it’s being offered with no reserve, so will sell from the very first bid, no matter how derisory that might be. The vendor says "I have some regrets selling her – but it’s important that she goes to a good home – used but looked after!". With a sweet-revving V8 under the bonnet and that brilliant folding roof, Teutonic heavy metal has rarely looked more tempting.
