Background
Designed to blend driving appeal with typically BMW build quality and comfort, the 5 Series has always found firm favour with driving enthusiasts over the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class or other contemporary equivalent, with BMW’s large saloon often coming up trumps against its competition.
With the E39 generation 5 Series, BMW were determined to come out on top once again, with executives deciding that throwing extortionate amounts of money into R&R and development being the best way to stay on top form.
Well, it certainly worked. Not only was the styling fantastic - and largely timeless, with the generation looking remarkably modern compared to other large saloons from its day - but the level of technology and equipment within the car beggared belief, and with a plethora of trim levels and engines on offer, there was a 5 Series to suit almost any requirements.
Featuring a significant proportion of aluminium for major components such as the front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering on four and six-cylinder models and either a sedan or estate (touring) body style, the E39 5-Series was a wonderfully versatile and long-lived car, with the touring version eventually bowing out during 2004 as the last model in production.
Whilst the V8-powered E39 M5 is still widely regarded as one of the best cars to ever come out of BMW’s M-Division, what if you wanted a V8 engine without the more aggressive, in-your-face styling or eye-catching M badges? Step right this way…
