Background

Designed to blend driving appeal with typically BMW build quality and comfort, the 5 Series has always found firm favour with driving enthusiasts over the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class or other contemporary equivalent, with BMW’s large saloon often coming up trumps against its competition.

With the E39 generation 5 Series, BMW were determined to come out on top once again, with executives deciding that throwing extortionate amounts of money into R&R and development being the best way to stay on top form.

Well, it certainly worked. Not only was the styling fantastic - and largely timeless, with the generation looking remarkably modern compared to other large saloons from its day - but the level of technology and equipment within the car beggared belief, and with a plethora of trim levels and engines on offer, there was a 5 Series to suit almost any requirements.

Oh, and the V8-powered E39 M5 is still widely regarded as one of the best cars to ever come out of BMW’s M-Division, which is testament indeed to the core design of the E39 5 Series.

Overview

A Japanese-delivered 530i M-Sport, this E39 was first registered in 2002, and has spent the majority of its life in Japan, in the custodian of its one and only registered owner from new.

Imported into the UK by our vendor in 2019 after hunting for a low-mileage, rust-free facelift model for his modest personal BMW collection, this 530i turned out even better than they expected, being in original condition throughout and evidently cherished by its previous owner.

Having professionally sourced and imported the car, along with registering it for use on UK roads and paying all the required duties and taxes, this E39 has been an enjoyable and usable modern classic for our vendor - the only registered UK owner - having taken it to local car shows as well as to events at Goodwood, a name which should be more than familiar to any visitors of this website.

So, if it’s so good, why would our vendor sell it? Well, remember how we said the E39 M5 was the pinnacle of this generation of 5 Series? Evidently, our vendor thinks so too, as he’s purchased one for himself, meaning this stunning 530i is now looking for a new home.

Exterior

Taking the time to source the correct car has evidently paid dividends for our vendor, as this is perhaps the cleanest E39 this author has ever laid eyes on.

The bodywork is blissfully straight throughout with no alignment issues or untoward panel gaps, and there are no noticeable dents, dings or impact damage that we could see during our inspection.

Similarly, the paintwork is sublime throughout. Of course, silver hides marks well and there are a few stone chips seen in the usual areas such as the lower front bumper and leading edge of the bonnet, but these are remarkably minor even for such a low-mileage example.

We have noted a non-OE aerial stuck to the rear window which was likely affixed during the car's time in Japan, but this shouldn’t be too much trouble to remove. Being super picky, we’d suggest that the black quarter trims on the bumpers have possibly seen better days but the vendor has said that when they are coated with a bumper gel they do come back.

All four wheels are immaculate following refurbishment by renowned specialists Lepsons, and are shod in matching Dunlop rubber - always a good sign of a fastidious owner.

Interior

Upon opening the driver’s door of this E39, the first thing that strikes you is just how new the interior of this E39 looks. We aren’t talking about styling - that is very much ‘of its era’ but still looks wonderful - we’re talking about the condition; it’s simply wonderful.

The seats show virtually no signs of wear, creasing or marking in the front, and in the rear the bench seat looks almost new. The carpets are of a similar quality, as are the door cards and headliner, with the latter showing no signs of sagging.

The centre console remains in excellent shape with only the lightest of wear, and the aluminium inlays to the dashboard, door cards and other areas are all in fantastic condition, retaining an impressive finish and showing no notable damage that we could see.

In the boot, the classic BMW fold-down tool kit is present and largely complete, with only a couple of small items missing, as seen in image 29.

All the systems are reported to be working as intended, and there are no known faults with the car’s electronics, gauges or switchgear.

Naturally, the satellite navigation system is still in Japanese, so it wouldn’t be much use in the UK, but the originality of the interior is certainly impressive. This also means the clocks are in KM rather than miles, which should be noted by any prospective purchasers.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the 3.0-litre inline-six engine presents wonderfully, in keeping with the rest of the car’s condition. As far as we could see, there are no signs of any leaks, damaged hardware or signs of any pending issues.

On the road, the car reportedly drives “like new” and is wonderfully ‘tight’ in its characteristics, such is the condition of the vehicle and the care it has received, no doubt additionally aided by the remarkably low mileage, which adds up to less than 2,000 miles covered per year, on average.

Looking underneath the car, this E39 is typical of Japanese-imported cars in that it is in fantastic shape under the bodywork, thanks to the largely salt-free roads of the country. We can see a couple of spots of ‘bloom’ on areas such as the exhaust backbones and some cracking paint on the anti-roll bars, but otherwise, we’re very impressed indeed by what we see.

History

Naturally, for a car that has spent most of its life in Japan, most of the service history and paperwork is in Japanese, of course.

However, what we can deduce from this is that the car has evidently seen plenty of BMW main dealer servicing with a variety of ‘1’ and ‘2’ inspections recorded in the OE service book, which sits alongside the other dealer manuals and handbooks included in the BMW book pack.

From the cars time with our vendor, we have the de-registration certificate, V5 showing 0 former UK keepers, two keys, the export certificate from Japan, two MOT certificates, a mileage record printout, and an invoice for extensive recent work by Leatherhead motors.

This recent work included not only a full oil and filter service, but also diagnostic work to the emission system, a new crank case breather and pipes, full brake inspection, various valves and hoses and a new manifold gasket, with the total coming to £818.51.

Summary

Perhaps the closest thing to a ‘new’ E39 on the market? Well, according to our vendor it certainly is. Whilst we wouldn’t like to make such sweeping statements, what we can attest to is that this E39 is in utterly stunning condition, and we’d happily label it as a true ‘time warp’ car that is certainly up there with the best of them, and is absolutely one of the best we’ve ever seen.

Presented in excellent condition throughout, both mechanically and aesthetically, this 2002-registered, Japanese-imported BMW 530i transports the driver back to the early 2000s, when BMW built stylish, restrained cars to an incredibly high standard, with kidney grilles that were in proportion to the rest of the bodywork!

Complete with an impressive service history and benefitting from both low ownership and low mileage, this is an opportunity for BMW enthusiasts, collectors and drivers alike.

As such, we estimate this auction will reach somewhere in the region of £8,000 to £12,000 so be sure to get your bids in to be in with a chance of owning this wonderful M-Sport equipped 530i.
