Background
Released in 2003 and following hot on the heels of the success enjoyed by the E39 generation, the E60 5 Series introduced modern styling, improved comfort and convenience, and a whole host of cutting-edge technology that transformed the way this executive-level saloon (or Touring) drove in day-to-day life.
For example, the E60 saw the first instance of the now much-loved iDrive infotainment system, a heads-up-display, active cruise control and steering, lane departure warning, voice-controlled systems and even adaptive headlights, all of which were at the forefront of automotive technology upon release. Notably, it was also the first 5-Series to feature turbocharged petrol engines in its lineup, six-speed automatic transmission and regenerative braking.
Specifically, the 520i - as seen here - featured a 2.2-litre M54 n/a inline-six engine, producing 168bhp at the wheels and 155 lb-ft of torque, blending economy with silky-smooth BMW six-cylinder driving characteristics. Later 520i models moved to the N43 inline-four engine post-2005 MY, making earlier cars more desirable for those looking for the classic BMW driving experience.
