Background

Introduced in 2014, the first-generation BMW 4-Series - designated the F32/F33/F36 depending on body style - was designed as the successor to the E92 3-Series, offering executive comfort in a two-door coupé, convertible or five-door ‘Gran Coupé’ body.

As per almost all BMW models, the F32 4-Series received a mild facelift (or LCI, to use the proper BMW terminology) with LED lights, redesigned bumpers, revised suspension, and additional options offered on post-2017 models.

This particular 4-Series is an LCI F32 420i M Coupé, with a whole host of factory extras, a 2.0-litre B48 turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, and - most importantly - three pedals, and a stick between the seats (a.k.a a gear lever) that lets you change gear manually (all six of them!) something we don’t often see in non-M BMWs of this era…

Overview

Purchased new from BMW Park Lane of London in January 2018, this rare manual transmission-equipped 420i M is being sold due to the sad passing of the owner, with the vehicle being sold by a close friend on behalf of his estate.

The reason for there being one former keeper noted on the V5 is due to the car having been transferred into the late owner’s wife’s name, for insurance and tax purposes, though the late owner had the car from new until his passing.

From the factory, this example was generously equipped with a number of desirable optional extras, a full list of which can be found in the history section of the gallery below. Highlights of these options include the following:

- BMW ‘LA’ wheels, M-Star spoke

- M-Sports package

- Electrically-operated glass roof

- Auto-dimming interior mirror

- Sports seats

- Heated front seats

- Parking Distance Control (PDC)

- Tyre pressure display

- Alarm system

- Automatic air-conditioning

- Navigation system

- Rain-sensing wipers

- Cruise control

- ‘Light package’

- ‘Instrument panel with extended scope’

- M-Sports suspension

- M leather steering wheel

- M aerodynamics package

- High-gloss ‘Shadow Line’ trim

We’re told that the late owner was “passionate about driving” and cherished the vehicle throughout his ownership, relishing the ability to shift gears himself, and always garaged the vehicle whenever it was parked up at his home address.

Exterior

Resplendent in a fantastic shade of Silver with undertones of light blue, this 420i M is virtually box-fresh in its condition, thanks to years of cherished, considerate and fastidious use and enjoyment in the hands of just one owner.

Naturally, for a vehicle with less than 20,000 miles and only one owner, the overall condition of this executive coupé is fantastic throughout, with no signs of any mis-aligned panels, no history of accident damage or bodywork, and no obvious signs of any heavy wear-and-tear.

Looking closer, the usual brace of stone chips is visible on the front bumper and leading edge of the bonnet, along with a small mark/scuff to the lower front bumper area, visible in image number 74.

Elsewhere, the windscreen itself appears to have been lightly peppered with stone chips (images number 78 and 79) whilst on the nearside rain gutter channel above the windscreen there is a small blemish, visible in image 82.

There are a few minor abrasions visible to the rear bumper, with a small cluster on the central-nearside area (image 115) and towards the offside edge, visible in image 117.

There are also a couple of very minor marks to the edges of the doors (typical in today’s world of narrow parking spaces) but otherwise there is little else to report.

The panels all fit flush, all four wheels remain in excellent shape with only some light kerbing to the N/S/R wheel, and there are no signs of damage to either the front or rear lights.

It’s good news all around, then.

Interior

Opening the doors, the story is much the same as it was on the outside, with the interior presenting in nigh-on-immaculate condition throughout, as you’d expect for a lightly-used and cherished vehicle of this era.

All of the seats are free of any rips, tears or staining, though there are some small indentations visible to the rear seats, specifically on the lower rear section of the offside rear seat, and on the nearside rear seat side trim, as seen in image 62.

Elsewhere, there is a small abrasion/scuff noted on the nearside door inner sill/jamb (image 106) whilst there is also some small staining/areas of wear visible on the rear of the seats, shown in the boot (image 204).

The high-traffic areas such as the iDrive controller, steering wheel, gearstick and switches display light commensurate wear such as very minor marks and imperfections, whilst we noticed the graphics on the start/stop button have worn away (image 137) and there is - what appears to be - a small stain on the drivers door armrest, shown in image 94.

There are no reported faults with any of the systems, switches, displays or other electrical systems within the vehicle.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the engine bay presents in clean, tidy condition, with no signs of any damage to the various covers, trims or panels that are visible in this high-tech ‘bay. Naturally, there is little on show, thanks to the numerous cover panels, but everything we can see looks to be ship-shape and in good order.

There appears to be no known faults with the vehicle, and we’ve noted no untoward issues during the car’s time with us at our Abingdon HQ.

Underneath, the chassis looks to be in good shape and shows no cause for concern that we can see.

The most recent MoT took place on 05 January 2022, and resulted in a clean pass with no advisory items. The next scheduled service is not due for another 18,000 miles according to the vehicles’ on-board system.

History

Included with the vehicle is the V5 registered keepers document, a full breakdown of the vehicle’s specification and list of optional extras, and a print-out of the online service history for the vehicle, detailing all of the services carried out to-date, along with warranty work carried out to the DME in March 2021, as part of a recall/warranty TSB for all F2X, F3X, G1X, G3X models with the B46, 56 or 58 engines.

As always, we’ve photographed all of the documentation that we’ve received, and it is available to view at the end of the gallery below.

Summary

With just one owner from new, a strong factory specification and the rarely-optioned six-speed manual transmission, this is a wonderful example of the much-loved F32 4-Series from when BMW knew how to design good-looking vehicles, and with the added perk of being an M-Sport example, with all of the associated upgrades.

Offered for sale with an estimate of £20,000 to £25,000, there is a reason these 4-Series’ are so widely praised by their drivers - why not find out why for yourself?
