PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

Designed to replace the 503, with which it shared the mechanical layout, along with the 502 sedan and the 507 roadster of the 1950s, the BMW 3200 CS was produced in just over 600 examples from 1962 to 1965. There is an important piece of Italy in the design of this elegant coupe, which was at the top of the Bavarian manufacturer's range at that time. To achieve a more modern and attractive car than the model it was preparing to replace, BMW turned to Bertone, which also provided for the construction of the bodies in its factory in Grugliasco, on the outskirts of Turin. A young Giorgetto Giugiaro designed a car with a streamlined, aerodynamic silhouette, reprising the architecture and some of the styling cues he had already experimented on "his" Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint and Giulia Sprint GT. Such a noble silhouette could not but be paired with a powerful and refined engine: the choice, keeping with tradition, fell unsurprisingly on an aluminium alloy V8 engine powered by two carburettors. With a displacement of 3168 cc, BMW's eight-cylinder provided 160 hp, enough to push this beautiful four-seater coupe to a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

Overview

This BMW 3200 CS, chassis number 76503, was first registered in Germany on June 3, 1965, as attested by the original German documents accompanying the car. The BMW arrived from Germany to Italy in 2018 and it benefited from a complete body restoration, without subsequently being registered. The odometer shows a mileage of 47,051 km.

Exterior

Having recently benefited from a total restoration, the bodywork is in very good order. The silver-coloured paint is glossy and uniform over the entire body of the car. According to what the current owner told us, all the chrome parts have recently been completely restored and polished: from the bumpers to the rim cups, from the exterior mirror hood to the frames of the headlights, turn signals and glass parts. The headlights are intact, as are the elements of the grille with the classic "kidney grille". The only noticeable "defect" - assuming one can speak of a defect - is the BMW emblem at the "Hofmeister kink" at the bottom of the driver's side rear pillar: being the original from the 1960s, it appears slightly marred. Rather than a defect, however, it is one of those signs of the times that lend a unique charm to this kind of car.

Interior

According to what the current owner told us; the interior of the BMW is preserved. Based on photographs, it seems that the interior has not undergone any special restoration work. The soft blue leather covering the seats, rear sofa and door panels is intact and shows no signs of wear. This suggests that the car, even during its most "intense" period of use, has been given the best attention. The same goes for the plastic and chrome parts, which are intact and shiny. Only the wood trim on the dashboard appears slightly cracked. The carpets and the light blue carpet with which the cabin floor is lined are very good. The electric sunroof works properly.

Mechanical

The underside is in good order and is still protected by the protective anti-rust layer. There is no evidence of corrosion, but only some small oil oozing. The engine, as reported to us by the owner, runs well, but it is still advisable to carry out a general check of the mechanics, with a complete service, before using the car for long travels. The brake system has been completely overhauled.

History

We do not know in detail the history of this BMW but based on the original documents and information given to us by the seller, we have been able to reconstruct its most important stages. The car was sold new in Germany in 1965 and had two owners in that country. In Italy, where it arrived in 2018, it has benefited from a total restoration of the exterior. The car is not currently registered, but it can be duly admitted to circulation with, also, the possibility of being registered in the appropriate registers as a vehicle of historical and collector interest.

Summary

The BMW 3200 CS is one of the last "old style" BMW coupes before the advent of the E9 series models, which marked a profound shift in the Bavarian manufacturer's car styling. The classic and elegant line of this model still stands up very well. Besides, Giorgetto Giugiaro is a true master in designing cars capable of transcending fashion. Also contributing to the great prestige of this car is its noble V8 engine. The example on sale has the plus of being freshly restored. In addition, a flamboyant body combines an interior practically as new. This car represents undoubtedly a great opportunity for collectors who wish to get an important piece of the history of BMW and Italian car design.
