Designed to replace the 503, with which it shared the mechanical layout, along with the 502 sedan and the 507 roadster of the 1950s, the BMW 3200 CS was produced in just over 600 examples from 1962 to 1965. There is an important piece of Italy in the design of this elegant coupe, which was at the top of the Bavarian manufacturer's range at that time. To achieve a more modern and attractive car than the model it was preparing to replace, BMW turned to Bertone, which also provided for the construction of the bodies in its factory in Grugliasco, on the outskirts of Turin. A young Giorgetto Giugiaro designed a car with a streamlined, aerodynamic silhouette, reprising the architecture and some of the styling cues he had already experimented on "his" Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint and Giulia Sprint GT. Such a noble silhouette could not but be paired with a powerful and refined engine: the choice, keeping with tradition, fell unsurprisingly on an aluminium alloy V8 engine powered by two carburettors. With a displacement of 3168 cc, BMW's eight-cylinder provided 160 hp, enough to push this beautiful four-seater coupe to a maximum speed of 200 km/h.
