Background

When considering the best-looking car models produced by a manufacturer, it’s only natural that one is drawn to the exotic, the high-powered and the overtly sporting.

In the world of BMW, there are plenty of poster boys and girls to choose from. Those with a modern eye may point to the muscular BMW 1M; while in the world of modern classics, can you get better than the subtly aggressive E30 M3 Sport Evo?

In the Seventies, you could look to the 3.0CSL in both standard road going or wild ‘Batmobile’ forms. Of course it’s highly likely we’d all end up back in the year 1956, with the achingly pretty 507.

If it’s the best-resolved and most pleasing all-round BMW design you’re searching for though, for us it’s hard to top the 2002. With a low belt-line, high-glasshouse and gloriously understated design details – simple kidney grill badge, profusion of brightwork and elegant circular taillights – it’s the ultimate crowd-pleaser.

The good news is that the mechanical package more than backed up the visuals. Supremely well built, it was endowed with a gloriously capable chassis, perky four-pot engine and a surprisingly hard-charging character.

It didn’t take long after the 75bhp 1600’s arrival in 1966 for the plaudits to arrive, and they continued to be bestowed as the engine grew in size and power.

Top of the tree (putting the low-volume hooligan-esque Turbo aside) was the 2002tii, its 1990cc engine endowed with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection for a fiery 130bhp and an impressive 120mph top speed. Specifications are one thing, but anyone who’s ever driven a tii knows just how good they are.

Overview

This lovely 1975 BMW 2002 TII has been with the vendor since 2012, and within that time, it is safe to say it's been used more as an ornament rather than being driven, covering just 2,011 miles in the past ten years. The vendor, who is a keen mechanic has seen the BMW meticulously maintained as he enjoys fettling with his collection and driving them only occurs when the weather is right, just enough to keep everything moving as it should.

The 2002 is believed to have been given an external restoration approximately five years before the vendor purchased it. The engine and interior are said to be original and are still in excellent condition.

Exterior

Finished in Chaminox (085) White, the 2002 presents exceptionally well. As mentioned earlier, the car was given an external restoration approximately 15 years ago, which has stood the test of time and reflects how little the car has been used and stored, as the paintwork is in excellent order.

The iconic front end was the start of the shark nose era for BMW; the sharp front end set the 2002 apart from the rest. The bonnet aligns as you would expect, opening and closing correctly. The chrome bumper was re-plated a couple of years ago, leaving it in excellent condition; there are no splits or cracks in the headlights or indicators to point out. There is a small amount of age-related tarnishing to the cast aluminium indicator surrounds, but nothing excessive. The famous BMW grille is the original, and does have a small ding, but it would be an easy item to replace if desired. Moving further up to the windscreen, unfortunately, there is a small crack in the corner of the driver's side; the seal looks to be in good condition with no signs of perishing.

Looking down the flanks of the 2002, there are no dings or dents to be seen, and the doors appear to align straight and even with a matching panel gap, they easily open and close with a firm hand. The trim around the windows, opening front quarters, and door handles look to be original, with just some fine age-related scratches, as you would often see on any vehicle of this age. The windows are in good condition with no apparent scratches.

To the rear, and this is just as good as the rest. The boot lid aligns well with an even gap, the light lenses are free from splits or cracks, and the badges are in good order with no notable tarnishing. The rear bumper, like the front, has also been re-plated and so is in excellent condition. The wheels are the original steels which have been repainted at some point. Again, these are in good condition with just the odd rust spot on them. The vendor will be replacing the rusty rear wheel nuts by the time the auction ends. Fitted with matching Pirelli tyres, these are in excellent condition with a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

True 70’s appeal inside the 2002, the Lux spec blue velour material is in its original condition and in very good order. The driver’s bolster has gone a little saggy, but the material is intact with no damage. The passenger and rear seat are excellent for the age of the vehicle, as are the door cards, which have no real signs of wear other than a small plastic piece missing from the centre of the speaker grille. The wood trim is excellent, and the manual windows operate correctly.

The dashboard is in good condition, with just a small split near to the clock. The instruments are in good condition and reported to be working correctly, with the odometer reading of 93,840 miles. The switchgear is in good condition with no real signs of wear to the images on the buttons. The only thing which was spotted not to work was the clock. Looking down, the centre console has a period-correct Blaupunkt radio cassette fitted.

The carpets throughout the cabin are in very good condition with minimal wear, and the headlining is clean with no sagging or damage. Inside, the boot is also nice and clean, with no areas of concern. The spare wheel and Jack are present, lying beneath the false floor, which is in good condition.

Mechanical

Being the later model 2002, this car benefits from a fuel-injected 2.0 litre engine. The fuel injection system was highly advanced for the time giving more power and even better fuel economy,

The BMW fires up with no hesitation and comes quickly to an even idle with no untoward noises coming from the 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine. This is coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox which the vendor reports has a smooth change, and the 2002 pulls strongly through the gears.

Inside the engine bay appears to be all original; it presents well and retains the original decals. The engine didn’t appear to have any leaks at the time of our visit, and everything looks and sounds in good order.

The car's underside has recently been given a fresh coat of underseal to help futureproof it against any unwanted corrosion from creeping in. The vendor reports the vehicle to drive and handle as you would expect, with no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension, and the brakes bring it to a halt in an even manner with no juddering through the pedal.

History

The V5 is present for the BMW and shows seven previous keepers. These were early on in its life, and as mentioned earlier, the vendor has owned it for ten years and the keeper before for four years.

The original owner’s manual and a printout with some information on the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system are present. Unfortunately, there isn’t much in the way of paperwork with the car; it is one of those cars where the condition will sell it, which is certainly no disappointment.

The vendor has carried out servicing work and general maintenance, keeping the 2002 TII in fine fettle.

Summary

It's German, it's a classic, and it’s a car which doesn’t disappoint. The 2002 Tii is a fantastic car to own. It’s nippy enough with excellent handling and never fails to turn heads and receive a welcoming mob of appreciation as you drive down the high street.

A genuine 70s classic from BMW is sure to draw in a lot of attention from many current BMW enthusiasts or buyers who appreciate this beautiful German classic.

We estimate the Munich classic to bring in the region of £15,000 - £20,000.
