Background

German racing driver and ex-Opel employee Erich Bitter could not find a German company to produce the bodyshells and interiors for his Bitter SC, so turned instead to Italy.

He formed a company called ‘Bitter Italia’ to organise and finance the manufacture of SC bodies and interiors ready for their mating to Opel engines and mechanical components at Bitter's works at Schwelm.

The Bitter SC was designed with the help of Giovanni Michelotti and produced in Turin Italy.

Just 461 examples were built between 1979 and 1984.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this LHD auto car comes with no history or service records.

It entered the vendor’s collection in 2016.

The odometer reads 75,418 kms.

The chassis number is WO9526219CSB09007.

This car has some conspicuous corrosion issues and, in our opinion, has the status of a ‘project’.

In other words, while it’s not an altogether bad Bitter, and it’s certainly not the best Bitter, it could yet be a better Bitter.

Exterior

Many Bitters were troubled by corrosion issues in the early 1980s and this car is clearly no exception.

While the bodywork is largely free of any big dents, dinks, folds or creases, and the panels are fairly straight and even, it is nonetheless hosting outbreaks of rust in various (and numerous) places.

There is bubbling, flaking and, in places, holes, where the rust has taken a firm grip.

The worst instances are in the usual places – wheel arches, sills and ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ pillars.

There is also rust in evidence somewhere on most panels.

The lights and lenses have seen better days, the rubber trim is perished and/or faded, and the rear bumper is missing.

The wheels seem to be in reasonable condition, although only three of them are matching (the spare is also non-matching).

Overall, there is a fair bit of work to be done here.

Interior

The interior of the car is in slightly better condition but is also in need of some attention.

The tan-coloured leather upholstery and trim is not too bad, bar a couple of small splits to the leather on the front seats.

The rear seats look fairly reasonable, as do the carpets and mats.

The steering wheel centre boss is missing and the electric cabling in the steering column is dangling loose.

The headlining is split down the middle.

A section of the centre console has broken free.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

Unsurprisingly, the undersides of this car show rust dust and flaking in various places.

The structure of the engine bay has been badly affected by corrosion and there numerous holes.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery, which are copies, in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 1982 Bitter SC is a project car whose rarity might nonetheless make it a project that’s worth pursuing.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €1,000 - €2,000.
