“ Sporty Steel Body Saloon - Pleasant Inside & Out - No Reserve ”

The value of this particular Bentley S1 is estimated to be between $10,000 and $16,000. Slightly less rare than its Rolls Royce badged cousin, the Bentley can be more affordable — but it's essentially the same car underneath. It's luxurious, looks great, and as a classic, it has a lot of potential.

Background

Launched alongside the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud series of cars, the Bentley S-series was introduced to replace the R Type. It shared mechanicals and design with the Silver Cloud, and there were three generations, namely the S1, S2, and S3. In total, the Crewe-based manufacturer sold about 13,000 examples of the Silver Cloud and S-series in the decade-long period these were on sale. This is a respectable figure indeed, considering these were some of the top-drawer luxury cars money could buy.

Overview

The Bentley S1 is where the S-series of cars began. The rather traditional design wasn't too radically different from the preceding R Type, but it was evidently more luxurious and classier. Bentley manufactured more than 3000 examples of the S1, and all of them were powered by a straight-six engine. Apart from the coach-built bodies, which were a traditional route for those buying Bentleys (and Rolls Royces), from the MkVI onwards, one could order a Bentley straight from the factory with a built-up pressed steel body. And that trend continued with the S1.

The example here is exactly that: a standard-body Bentley S1. Its chassis code, B147LBC, tells that the left-hand-drive car was produced in 1956. The chassis plaque reflects that it was a car destined for France — or a French colony. It has 10101 miles on the odometer and its condition appears to be good, given its age.

Exterior

With its decently sized unashamedly curvaceous body, the Bentley S1 does leave a lasting impression. Okay, it's certainly not as flamboyant as some American cars of the era, but Bentley's charm is equally hard to escape. Two-tone paintwork and white-walled tires further make the S1 irresistible. This 1956 example gets that, which makes it look timeless. The body appears to be clean although the paint has tiny specks that might need attention.

Interior

This is pre-Naim Audio, ultra-luxurious interior Bentley, but even then, there's no way one could describe the S1's interior as basic. There are two rows of seating with a dual seat at the front and a visibly more cushioned rear bench. The front seat backs have fold-out tables, the dashboard is all veneer, and the door cards are a mix of wood and leather. The Bentley S1 we have available here isn't too far from perfect, but the interior will need some tidying up. The front seats have some use-related marks on the leather but there's no damage, and the rear bench appears to be in better shape. The rubber seals around the doors will need to be replaced, too.

Mechanical

The Bentley S1 was powered by a 4.9-liter straight-six engine, it had a 123-inch wheelbase, and a four-speed automatic was available. Hydraulic brakes were standard, too, which we think would've been necessary considering the S1 isn't light by any means, at over 4,000 lbs. The car here appears to be original underneath, too: it has the factory plaque, and there are no visible signs of damage.

History

The Bentley S1 was launched in 1955, replacing the R Type, which was largely a MkVI with a bigger boot. Like the MkVI, the S1 was available with a standard pressed steel body from the factory, although customers who wanted a more unique or customised option could still opt for one of the coach-built models. Bentley sold more than 3,000 examples of the S1, making it a fairly successful product. And we don't wonder why.
