Background

Developed in the wake of WW2, Rolls-Royce’s Silver Cloud and Bentley’s mechanically identical S1 were graceful, beautifully made, extraordinarily refined, and steadfastly traditional, utilizing body-on-frame construction and a smooth, silent-running straight-six with roots dating to 1922.

Overview

The 1958 model year auction example is equipped with “standard steel” saloon coachwork, as fitted to roughly 2,900 of the 3,538 built from 1955 to 1959.

The car was among the very last powered with an F-head straight-six tracing its ancestry to Rolls-Royce’s Twenty of 1922, a smooth, silent, torquey, and robust unit replaced by an all-new OHV V8 of similar disposition in 1959.

Exterior

Excluding unique Bentley badging, radiator grille, and other relatively minor trim differences, the standard-bodied S1 was identical to Rolls’ contemporaneous, factory-bodied Silver Cloud. Both wore stamped steel coachwork with aluminum opening panels (hood, trunk lid, and doors).

They were each restrained, handsome machines, though the S1 was endowed with a touch more elegance by a less ostentatious grille. In terms of radiator mascots, Flying B vs. Spirit of Ecstasy is perhaps a more evenly fielded contest–both are tops.

Interior

Rich, luxurious materials line the large cabin, including top quality wood veneers, leather hides, and wool carpets.

The left-hand steering wheel is flanked by a selector for a GM-sourced 4-speed automatic transmission, though a manual gearbox was available exclusively in Bentleys through 1957. The General arguably built the best self-shifting transmissions in the world at the time, and a two-pedal arrangement is better suited to the car’s character as well.

Note the Bentley B-branded gauges, optional a/c and radio, and fold-down wooden picnic tray tables for rear seat passengers.

Mechanical

As noted previously, the car’s engine is an F-head straight-six. Displacing 4.9 liters and utilizing an unusual overhead intake and in-block exhaust valve arrangement, the Sir Henry Royce-designed unit likely produced on the order of 175 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, though in keeping with company tradition of the time, official figures were never divulged.

History

This car is offered with limited historical documentation.

Summary

Even if their differences are rather superficial, somehow a vintage Bentley is just a bit cooler than the equivalent Roller. This one’s high spec, left-hand drive, and attractive, sun-reflecting colors may be particularly attractive for cruising America’s West Coast.

Estimated $20,000 - $30,000.
