Background

Following the MkVI — the brand's first post-war car and also one that was available with body from the factory — Bentley introduced a restyled version called the R Type. It shared mechanicals with the MkVI but had a more proportionate overall appearance. On sale between 1952 and 1955, the R Type was, as you'd expect, available in a variety of body styles, including the much-revered Continental — and other coach built examples.

Background

Following the MkVI — the brand's first post-war car and also one that was available with body from the factory — Bentley introduced a restyled version called the R Type. On sale between 1952 and 1955, the R Type was, as you'd expect, available in a variety of body styles, including the much-revered Continental — and other coach built examples.

Overview

Listed on The Market is a 1953 Bentley R Type in the standard-bodied form. It bears the chassis number B34LSR; it is a 1953 model year, left-hand drive example. It appears to have a little over 80,000 miles on the clock, and it's accompanied by some parts, tools, and a spare wheel. The overall condition, details of which can be found below, is decent with some visible damage on the paintwork and interior wear. You can also refer to the detailed photos in the gallery below.

Exterior

The Bentley R Type wasn't an all-new model, but a better-designed iteration of the MkVI, thanks to the bigger boot. Like was the case with the MkVI, the standard saloon body came straight from the factory, unless the buyer wanted one of the more unique coach-built versions. In terms of appearance, its looks were appreciated across the globe, and that is expected to continue now as well. This 1953 example has slightly imperfect bodywork with paint damage along with small dents. There's also some visible surface rust under the door and fenders.

Interior

The MkVI wasn't made as a large chauffeur-driven car, but one that's compact and could be driven around easily. Having said that, the interior is still plush, and even seven decades later, it looks to be a great place to be in, the R Type's cabin. The silver car listed here has a matching interior, with a mix of wood and grey upholstery. The condition can be best described as showing signs of wear but not damaged.

Mechanical

From the late 40s onwards, the Bentley MkVI (and the following R Type) range was powered by a 4.5-liter, straight-six Rolls Royce engine. The engine bay doesn't exhibit unusual damage, but like on the rest of the car, there's some paint damage, there's some rust, and the rubber seals might require a replacement. Looking at some of the bits, it's evident that the car has probably had a respray at some point.

History

The MkVI was the first post-war Bentley to have left Crewe. It was also the first Bentley that was offered with its body from the factory. Unless you wanted a more bespoke example from one of the coachbuilders, the MkVI — and the R Type that replaced it — could be had with a factory-built standard sedan. In total, about 5200 MkVIs were produced whereas the R Type production figures were roughly half of that, at 2323 units.

Summary

The 1953 Bentley R Type has an estimated value between $15,000 and $20,000. While it's not perfect, the car has great potential to be brought back to its original glory. Both the MKVI and R Type have been appreciated by classic car lovers, and the chance to own one is not to be missed.
