Background
Introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the second-generation Bentley Continental GT aimed to build upon the success of the first-generation Continental, boosting power output, improving cabin refinement and bringing the styling up-to-date with a gentle aesthetic refresh, without removing signature design cues such as the creased edge to the bonnet, general proportions or quad-headlight front end.
The second-generation of the Continental GT also saw a twin-turbocharged V8 offered for the first time, alongside the now-iconic twin-turbocharged W12 engine which is synonymous with the Bentley brand. This was seen as a way of further integrating the Bentley brand into the Volkswagen AG group following their acquisition in 1998, with the V8 engine being joint-developed with Audi.
In 2012, Bentley introduced the Speed Coupé version of the Continental GT, which utilised the twin-turbocharged W12 engine, and upped the power to 616bhp with 590 lb-ft of torque, allowing this 2,320kg beast to cover the 0-60 sprint in just 4.0 seconds, and go on to a top speed in excess of 200mph.
Reviewed by Top Gear in 2015, the Speed Coupé was stated to “bring the noise and sprit back [into the Bentley brand] …it’s deeply, deeply fast. Once up and running, the W12 is mighty.” No wonder it remains such a hit with enthusiasts to this day!
