Background

Introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the second-generation Bentley Continental GT aimed to build upon the success of the first-generation Continental, boosting power output, improving cabin refinement and bringing the styling up-to-date with a gentle aesthetic refresh, without removing signature design cues such as the creased edge to the bonnet, general proportions or quad-headlight front end.

The second-generation of the Continental GT also saw a twin-turbocharged V8 offered for the first time, alongside the now-iconic twin-turbocharged W12 engine which is synonymous with the Bentley brand. This was seen as a way of further integrating the Bentley brand into the Volkswagen AG group following their acquisition in 1998, with the V8 engine being joint-developed with Audi.

In 2012, Bentley introduced the Speed Coupé version of the Continental GT, which utilised the twin-turbocharged W12 engine, and upped the power to 616bhp with 590 lb-ft of torque, allowing this 2,320kg beast to cover the 0-60 sprint in just 4.0 seconds, and go on to a top speed in excess of 200mph.

Reviewed by Top Gear in 2015, the Speed Coupé was stated to “bring the noise and sprit back [into the Bentley brand] …it’s deeply, deeply fast. Once up and running, the W12 is mighty.” No wonder it remains such a hit with enthusiasts to this day!

Overview

First registered in July 2015, this stunning Continental GT Speed Coupé was finished in the subtle, yet rare shade of Black Velvet Metallic, over a deeply sumptuous, diamond-quilted leather interior.

Fitted from the factory with a strong slew of optional extras - along with the desirable Mulliner Driving specification, which comes as standard on the Speed model - this particular example is every inch the high-class, yet understated GT car, capable of demolishing entire continents without breaking a sweat, whilst the driver can arrive fresh-faced and ready to tackle whatever their evening may throw at them.

Purchased by our vendor - the third registered keeper - to add to their high-class collection of vehicles, the car has never actually been used on the road in its current ownership (other than one or two trade plated journeys) and as such the vendor has never seen it fit to put the V5 in their name.

Whilst in the current ownership, the car has been kept dry-stored, only emerging for MoT exams and servicing, with a service having been completed just prior to this auction going live, meaning it truly is ready for the next owner to simply jump in, crank the monstrous W12 engine, and point the car south towards wine country.

Exterior

Striking, classy and perhaps intimidating in its appearance, the Continental GT Speed oozes sophistication and status, especially finished in the wonderful shade of Black Velvet Metallic, which looks black in most lights but has a lovely hint of deep purple, perhaps plum, shades when the light hits it correctly. This shade of paint, along with the slightly lowered suspension and larger wheels offered with the Mulliner Driving Specification, makes this Speed Coupé a true design tour de force.

Naturally, for a vehicle that has covered just shy of 14,000 miles during its seven years of existence, the bodywork is virtually as-new, in that there are no signs of any dents, dings, scrapes or scuffs that we noticed during our photo shoot.

Similarly, the paintwork is in outstanding condition, with only a light smattering of stone chips visible to the front end and side skirts, as you’d expect from a high-performance vehicle. There are also one-or-two odd stone chips dotted around elsewhere, though you really do have to be purposefully looking for them to pick them out.

The various chrome badges, emblems and trims are all present and in wonderful shape, as are the wheels which wear only a couple of very minor marks and imperfections.

Interior

As per the bodywork and paint, the cabin of this 2015 Bentley Continental GT Speed remains in outstanding shape throughout, retaining its rich Nappa Leather smell, and an overall feeling of ‘freshness’ that simply cannot be replicated in a higher-mileage vehicle.

Up front, both of the diamond-quilted seats show only the most minor signs of use, such as light creases to the leather, most noticeable on the outer edges of the seats, whilst in the rear both seats look to have been barely - if ever - used.

Ahead of the driver, the dials, polished black dashboard trims, switches, steering wheel and gauges are all pristine, with no signs of anything more than the most minimal of usage marks to be seen.

On the floor, the over-mats remain in great shape, with no heavy staining noticed during our photo shoot. Up above, the headliner shows no signs of wear, whilst the only particularly noticeable signs of enjoyment seen on the interior are displayed on the inner Speed-branded sill covers, which showcase a few light marks and scuffs.

In the boot, the luggage compartment is in near-pristine condition, and there are no noted or reported faults with any of the car’s systems, switches or displays.

We also note that this particular vehicle is fitted with an optional Naim audio system. We are unsure of the specification cost but we are certain it isn't a cheap option.

Mechanical

Firing up with ease and settling into a characteristic silky-smooth idle, the twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine that powers this cruise missile of a vehicle is in rude health, and has been serviced since the photographs took place, meaning that the ‘service’ light on the dashboard can be disregarded.

Out on the road, there were no signs of any issues with the transmission, engine or chassis, with no strange behaviours or untoward noises reported.

In the engine bay itself, the block and its ancillaries present well as far as we can see, though the vast expanses of black plastic engine covers limit our view significantly.

Underneath, the car looks exactly as you’d expect for a limited-mileage vehicle with less than 10 years of use under its belt, and the most recent MoT exam shows a clean pass with no advisory items. The current MoT expires on 12 October 2022.

History

Included with the vehicle is the V5 showing three former keepers (technically four including the vendor, though as we’ve said, the V5 has never been put in their name) the stamped service handbook, two MoT certificates, a vehicle inspection sheet, three sets of keys and a handful of invoices, along with some miscellaneous Bentley literature.

As ever, we’ve photographed all of the documentation that has been delivered to us, and this can be viewed at the end of the gallery below.

Summary

With the ability to seemingly defy physics thanks to its twin-turbocharged W12 engine, a specification that most enthusiasts would give a vital organ for, and with low mileage and recorded owners, this is a truly stunning example of the coveted and much-loved Bentley Continental GT Speed Coupé, and would make for a wonderful addition to any garage, collection or driveway.

Offered with an estimate of £65,000 to £75,000, this is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone looking for a high-end, mile-munching performance coupé.
