Background

By the end of the 1970s, Bentleys accounted for a mere 3% of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' production, clearly a situation that could not be tolerated if the once-famous marque was to avoid extinction.

The solution was to seek to re-establish Bentley's credentials as the purveyor of high-performance luxury cars, and in a move calculated to evoke memories of the company's glorious past achievements at Le Mans, the name 'Mulsanne' was chosen for the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit's counterpart. This strategy would succeed brilliantly.

Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1982, the Mulsanne Turbo provoked a rash of headlines in the motoring press hailing the return of the 'Blower Bentley' - the 'Silent Sports Car' was back.

Bentley's 1980s resurgence had previously relied exclusively on models whose basic architecture was shared with other Rolls-Royce products, but on display at Geneva in 1985 was 'Project 90': a mocked-up coupé, styled by Messrs John Heffernan and Ken Greenley, which was intended to gauge public response to the idea of a high-performance car unique to Bentley.

When the real thing - the Bentley Continental R - was unveiled six years later, the waiting crowd burst into spontaneous applause. Again the work of Heffernan and Greenley, the Continental R benefited from computer-aided design and wind tunnel testing in the devising of its sleekly streamlined shape.

Despite the need to incorporate non-traditional features such as doors recessed into the roof, the result looked every bit a Bentley, albeit one restated for the 1990s. Also new was the gearbox: a four-speed automatic with 'overdrive' top ratio, but the main focus of interest was the newcomer's performance.

Needless to say, this was outstanding, the combination of the Turbo R engine in the new wind-cheating shape cutting the 0-97km/h time to 6.2 seconds and boosting top speed to in excess of 241km/h.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1993 LHD auto Bentley Continental R comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think it is a good, low kilometres example of a fine model from one of the world’s great sporting marques.

We believe it entered the vendor’s collection in 2013.

Exterior

This car’s pale metallic green paint presents very well and, in our opinion, helps accentuate the car’s aggressive, muscular stance and lean profile.

The bodywork is free from any significant dinks, dents, creases or folds.

The panel gaps and shut-lines are crisp, even and consistent.

With the exception of a little foxing on top of the grille, the chrome work is in very decent condition, as are the lights, badging, wheels and exterior fixtures and fittings.

The rear bumper is drooping slightly, particularly on the driver’s side.

There are some scuffs on the front bumper, the driver’s door and the rear wing on the same side.

There’s also a scratch above the side indicator on the driver’s side front wing.

There’s a scratch on top of the boot and a strip of lacquer missing from the edge of the boot lid.

There’s some lacquer missing on the driver’s side ‘C’ pillar and some cracks around the headlamp housing on the passenger side.

The exterior rubber trim is perished and cracked here and there.

Interior

While the interior is very dusty and dirty, it is basically sound and in decent condition – it just needs a really good clean.

The green leather upholstery is good overall and the seats are comfortable and supportive, front and back.

There are a few nicks to the leather on top of the driver’s seat and some of the leather trim around the centre console is a little worn.

The door cards are OK, as are the headlining and the glossy wood veneers.

As with the rest of the interior, the carpets are a bit grubby but should respond well to cleaning.

The boot is good and is home to a full set of sheepskin over-rugs.

We can’t vouch for the functionality of instruments, dials, buttons, knobs, switches or levers because we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay seems to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records beyond what is shown in the photography section.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery (which are photocopies) in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Although we can’t vouch for the car’s mechanical and electrical status, we can provide a positive report on what we’ve seen of the vehicle cosmetically.

We think this is a good example of both the marque and the model – and one that should respond well to a thorough clean – inside and out.

If this car proves to be dynamically and functionally as strong as it is aesthetically, then it has the potential to be a very desirable Bentley Continental R indeed.

We’re confident to offer this marvellous car for auction with an estimate of €20,000 - €30,000.
