Background
Produced from 1991 to 2003, the Continental R was the first Bentley to feature a body not shared with a Rolls-Royce model since the S3 Continental of 1965. In another first, the Continental R was the first Bentley model equipped with GM’s 4L80-E 4-speed automatic transmission. The fastest, most expensive, and most powerful Bentley automobile of its era, the Continental R was also the world’s most expensive production car at introduction. Taking the concept further, the Continental R Mulliner debuted for 1999 and combined the increased power – 420 bhp at 4,000 rpm – of Bentley’s Continental T with the longer wheelbase and aggressive, wide-body styling of the Continental R. In addition to hand-built quality and immense personalization, the Continental R Mulliner was capable of hitting 170 mph flat out, earning its “Crewe’s Missile” sobriquet. According to published marque authorities, only 131 examples of the Continental R Mulliner were produced between 1999 and 2002.
