Background

The Continental may be an old moniker for Bentley, but when it comes to the model released in the early noughties, there was a bit of a shake-up. The Continental GT was significant in the fact it was the first Bentley to be produced following the takeover by the Volkswagen Automotive Group. It’s also the first Bentley model to be made using mass production manufacturing techniques.

Having said that, the Continental GT can actually trace its origins back to the Concept Java, which was unveiled at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show and was a concept dreamed up by Rolls-Royce – the owners of Bentley at the time. The idea was to make a Bentley that was still exclusive, but more obtainable. Although, the Continental GT looks a lot different – the dash was inspired by the Concept Java, though – it held the same ethos that the Concept Java looked to achieve.

Following its debut at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the Continental GT was less than half the price of the outgoing Continental R, and whilst it was not a coach built car, hand assembly featured through much of the car, carried out at Bentley Crewe.

Under the Raul Pires and Dirk Van Braeckel designed body, which sits on Volkswagen’s D1 platform, is a 6 litre W12 twin turbocharged petrol offering 560hp and 650Nm of torque. This power is fed to all four wheels via a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox, with 62mph achieved in 4.8 seconds, and a top speed just south of 200mph. Very respectable when you consider it weighs well over two tons and offers more wood and leather than a stately home!

Overview

The example going for auction here has covered just 31,300 miles and is sure to be one of the cleanest available for sale right now. Finished in a timelessly elegant Silver Storm paint work with a sumptuous Chocolate Brown interior, it looks almost as good as when it rolled of the Bentley production line all the way in 2006. Ok, so the front alloys have ‘met’ a kerb one or two times, but that would be easily solved by refurbishing them.

As well as covering little miles in its lifetime, this British brute has only had two owners including the vendor. The car will come with plenty of service history, original booklets and two keys, but it’s worth noting the current registration plate will not come with the car – LG60 KYK will be displayed on the car instead.

This car comes with features such as 19” alloys, leather interior, front and rear parking sensors, multi-function steering wheel, dual zone climate control, electronically adjustable front seats, keyless entry, heated front seats, navigation, air suspension, and 6 CD changer to name a few.

Exterior

As you can see from the pictures, this 2006 example finished in Silver Storm is in fine condition and is sure to be one of the cleanest on the market. The front alloys do have noticeable scuffs, but that can easily be rectified by the next owner. Other than that, you’d need to get a magnifying glass to detect other defects, although it is worth noting there is a light scratch on the nearside front wing and some defects on the offside rear bumper.

Apart from these small imperfections, this low mileage example is in great condition and will need very little attention for the next owner. The 19” alloys are wrapped with Pirelli P Zero tyres, so it’s clear corners have not been cut when it comes to vehicle maintenance. All the glassware is in fine condition, as are all the exterior lights.

The side profile is timelessly majestic, especially when you slide down all the windows and find it’s pillarless. Make your way to the rear of the car you’ll find rear wings that are flared out to really accentuate the Continental GT’s muscular nature, but without shouting about it. All the chrome work and badges are in brilliant form and sparkle as strong as they did when the car left Crewe.

Interior

Open the pillarless door, climb over the Bentley branded kick plate and you’ll find an interior that’s enormously inviting. Finished in a contrasting Chocolate Brown, there’s more leather than you’ll ever want, which is complimented by plenty of wood trim – would you have it any other way in a Bentley? The chrome vents and switches are not only spotless, but they really help to add that extra bit of class in to what is a very luxurious cabin.

A Breitling clock sits proudly at the top of the centre console and is flanked by two large chrome vents for the climate control. The leather seats have stood the test of time well, with no rips, scuffs or tears, and the front seats offer a heated function as electronic adjustment with memory function. The steering wheel is also in good condition and the switchgear shows no sign of wear or damage. The vendor states that all the interior electrics work, so there should be gremlins ready to rear their head

The door cards are in fantastic condition and feature a two-tone finish to add even more character to the cabin. The headlining is trimmed using leather and looks absolutely spotless with no sagging. The ongoing theme of fine form extends to the rear seats, which look as if they may never have been used, that’s how good they look. Between them is even more cow hide in the form on an armrest as well as storage and vents for the climate control.

Mechanical

Before being dropped in to the Continental GT, the 6.0 litre W12 was used in the Volkswagen Phaeton, which uses the same platform. The engine itself is essentially two VR6 engines bolted together, but there are also two turbos for good measure. Thanks to 0-62 time under 5.0 seconds and a top speed almost 200mph, beating the Aston Martin in the process. The W12 is largely reliable but any major work will involve the engine coming out, and replacing the spark plugs is not a quick job. That should come as little surprise, though, because as you can see, there’s very little room in the engine bay left after sliding 12 cylinders in there.

The car has been well maintained using a mix of main dealer workshops and independent garages. The service book is plentiful with service stamps, with the most recent service being carried out by Specialist Cars in April of this year. Even more recently, the car was treated to four new Pirelli P Zero tyres, which will save the new owner the best part of £1,000.

Take a peak under the car and you’ll find little in the way of corrosion and other than a bit of road grime. The suspension arms look to be in good condition, the undertray has no damage and the exhaust is free from serious corrosion or holes.

History

A look through the MOT history (you’ll need to use registration LG06 KYK) and you are bound to be reassured as it’s very clean. If it hadn’t been for the tyres creating advisories last year – they have since been replaced, of course - this example would have had a clean sweep every year. The MOT is due soon but given the history, there should be no concerns.

Speaking of history, there is plenty of that when it comes to servicing ranging from main dealers to independent garages. The last service was carried out April this year, which was the 30,000 mile service carried out by Specialist Cars. The car is wearing ‘H2 HVB’ vehicle registration, but that will not come with the car, and in its place will be ‘LG06 KYK’, the original plate that the car came with.

Summary

Nowadays, the Bentley Continental represents a lot of car, for let’s face it, not a great deal of money, especially compared to what they were when they were brand new. Although there is a good choice on the market, there will not be many in this condition, history, number of owners and mileage. Yes, the front alloys could do with some attention, but that’s in the grand scheme of things, that is a drop in the ocean.

Finished in Silver Storm, it’s a timeless car that’ll look good anywhere, without shouting about its presence – well it might shout a bit when you fire up the W12! Not only is the interior an interesting shade but it’s stood the test of time very well and has clearly been looked after. The MOT history is nigh-on perfect and tyres will not be a concern for the next prospective as the vendor has fitted a full set, but has not scrimped in the process.

The estimate for this example is £25,000-£30,000, which is a relative snip compared to what you would have paid when the car was brand new, and nowadays that’s the sort of money you’d pay for a brand new top end Volkswagen Golf, which simply cannot match this W12 brute for luxury, of course. OK, you’ll spend less times the petrol pumps in the Golf, but at least with the Bentley, you’ll something very handsome whilst you fill up the tank.
