Background
Despite Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley having sold his eponymous company to Rolls Royce in 1931, his particular way of doing things somehow managed to survive. Legend had it that whilst still in charge W.O. used to wander the factory, pipe in mouth, observing the comings and goings. It was said that if he saw an employing doing something contrary to “the Bentley way” he would stop and give them such a penetrating stare that they would never repeat their misdemeanour. The next level of admonishment involved the pipe leaving the mouth. Worst of all was when the stare and the pipe removal were combined with a few terse words. Employees were known to have left and never returned after such an encounter.
Following a bleak period in the 1960’s and 70’s, when dire finances necessitated Bentleys being no more than badge engineered clones of the Rolls Royce range, prospects had started to improve under new owner Vickers. The launch of the Mulsanne in 1980 marked the start of a Bentley resurgence. From a low point of only 5% of joint production in the 70’s a Bentley to Rolls Royce ratio of 40:60 was achieved by 1986 and complete parity would follow a few years later.
The Bentley Eight and Turbo R would follow the Mulsanne and they, in turn, were replaced by the Brooklands in 1992. The Brooklands name was highly evocative for Bentley, the Surrey track having been witness to so many illustrious victories. It was Tim Birkin, one of the “Bentley Boys,” who set the ultimate lap record for Brooklands at 117. 96mph in a supercharged 4. 5 litre Bentley in 1932.
The Bentley Brooklands appeared to be an evolution of its immediate predecessors but in reality much had changed. New alloy wheels now featured together with a revised front air dam complete with recessed fog lamps. The shell of the distinctive waterfall radiator was now colour coded. In the sublime cabin new pleated door cards were present and the gear selector had moved from the steering column to the centre console. Despite being, essentially, Bentley’s entry model the base retail price started at £91,500.
