Background
Built between 1998 and 2009, the £170,000 Bentley Arnage assumed the lofty position at the top of the company’s four-door model tree. Powered by the 4.4-litre M62 BMW V8 in twin-turbocharged form it was the company’s first completely fresh model (alongside sister company Rolls-Royce’s Silver Seraph) for almost 20 years.
Come the end of the decade and after fighting BMW for control of Bentley, Volkswagen suddenly found itself in the unenviable position of having its bitter rival power some of its cars. That situation was untenable, so in 1999 it took the decision to revert to the old 6.75-litre Roll-Royce V8. These cars, despite receiving bigger wheels and brakes, as well as a stiffer bodyshell, proved to be a less rewarding car to drive than the BMW V8 examples.
Factor in that the BMW unit, despite having less prestige, was easier to maintain and more reliable, and it’s a no-brainer that if it’s an Arnage you want, then it surely should be one just like the example we have here.
Big, brutish, supremely comfortable and capable of destroying a continent in a single sitting, yet at a fraction of its original cost, this is a true driving behemoth.
