Background

Built between 1998 and 2009, the £170,000 Bentley Arnage assumed the lofty position at the top of the company’s four-door model tree. Powered by the 4.4-litre M62 BMW V8 in twin-turbocharged form it was the company’s first completely fresh model (alongside sister company Rolls-Royce’s Silver Seraph) for almost 20 years.

Come the end of the decade and after fighting BMW for control of Bentley, Volkswagen suddenly found itself in the unenviable position of having its bitter rival power some of its cars. That situation was untenable, so in 1999 it took the decision to revert to the old 6.75-litre Roll-Royce V8. These cars, despite receiving bigger wheels and brakes, as well as a stiffer bodyshell, proved to be a less rewarding car to drive than the BMW V8 examples.

Factor in that the BMW unit, despite having less prestige, was easier to maintain and more reliable, and it’s a no-brainer that if it’s an Arnage you want, then it surely should be one just like the example we have here.

Big, brutish, supremely comfortable and capable of destroying a continent in a single sitting, yet at a fraction of its original cost, this is a true driving behemoth.

Overview

Eye catching in sparking bright metallic blue, this Arnage, a large and imposing vehicle with incredible presence, always draws an admiring glance and lends a huge sense of occasion to every journey.

With only one former keeper on the logbook, the current owner acquired the Bentley in 2018 but despite enjoying owning and driving the car, and has kept it maintained and MOTed, the current test is valid until June 2023, with a number of cars in his collection he has barley covered 1000 miles a year in it, so has made the reluctant decision to part with the car.

Exterior

The metallic blue paint is an excellent choice for the big Bentley, the lighter shade hides the size, shows off the lines of the bodywork and gives the car a slightly more friendly feel.

The bodywork is in extremely good condition with very few blemishes and none serious. Aside from the expected stone chips, we noticed a small scuff on the nearside front bumper, a touched in scratch on top of the nearside rear wing and a tiny amount of bubbling below the offside read door window trim and by the boot badge. That aside the paint is superb, a smooth and glossy finish with a deep shine over the entire car. There are lots of heavy chrome brightwork details - badges, bumpers, window trim and more - all in excellent condition and the 19” alloy wheels are also good with just a few marks on the rims, and are wearing Pirelli rubber with good tread.

Interior

The sheer opulence of the interior is almost overwhelming. The quilted leather seats are deep and soft, and in an unusual but very attractive dark blue, bordering on magenta, that complements the blue paintwork and has just a light patina of use on the surface of the hide. The front seats have burr walnut panels for the movement switches and the rear seats also recline electrically.

The dashboard has the same blue leather on top and below, around the centre console and wrapping the steering wheel, which is in lovely condition. The dash centre is a mix of very fine wood, engine turned metal around the dials and thickly chromes controls, it is a wonderful sight and in excellent condition. The only flaw being a missing air vent grill on the drivers side.

The wood extends the the door caps, where it also looks stunning, although there is a little lifting of the lacquer in places. This is over more turned metal inserts and more blue leather, again in great shape.

Underfoot the blue carpets are in superb condition with almost no marks and very little sign of wear, and over head the blue leather headlining is unmarked.

Mechanical

There is little to see under the bonnet thanks to the plastic shrouding, but we can see the 6.75 litre twin turbo V8’s inlet manifold, Bentley badged rocker covers and the plaque telling us it was hand built in Crewe by D Moore.

Its an honest looking engine bay that has not been over cleaned and doesn’t show signs of fluid loss in the engine bay or below the car. The engine starts easily and runs well, the owner tells it is very good to drive and the gears shift as they should. Under the car all appears factory original.

History

Sadly despite being a one owner car prior to its current home, there is little history with the Arnage, only that it has covered incredibly low miles at just 31,150 and the condition reflects that. Although he has covered very few miles in the car, it has been serviced by Rolls Royce and Bentley specialist Gordon Dale in Surrey, who also took care of non working electric window. We do note however from an HPI report that it was declared a category N write off in 2018 but we are unsure as to the reason.

Summary

This Arnage really stands out thanks to its low miles and excellent condition, but more so due to the beautiful and striking colour scheme. This is a delightful example of the model.

We estimate this car to reach between £20,000 - £25,000.
