Background
Those who know their Bentley history will be familiar with the high-profile squabble between Volkswagen and BMW for the ownership of Bentley. The Arnage was launched in the midst of said altercation and had been in development long before its parent firm was forced to sell up to the Germans.
The feud for control of Rolls-Royce and Bentley was eventually settled in 1999, with VW taking over at Crewe, despite protests from BMW.
The Arnage had initially been powered by a BMW/Cosworth twin-turbo V8 engine, something that never sat happily with die-hard Crewe fans. That was all about to change as BMW were exceptionally unhappy with the loss of Bentley from their portfolio and threatened to withdraw its engine supply. This left VW little choice but to revert to the old L-Series Rolls-Royce V8 to power the Arnage.
With some heavy revisions, said engine in the Arnage T was fed compressed air by a pair of Garrett turbochargers. There was certainly life in the old pushrod 6.75-litre engine which now pumped out a scarcely believable 450bhp. This was enough to propel the bulbous Bentley from rest to 60mph in less than six seconds, whilst top speed was over 170mph.
Considering the Arnage’s considerable weight, the performance was mightily impressive. In fact, when the Arnage T was revealed in 2002, it was the world’s most powerful four-door saloon, and faster than anything that BMW, Mercedes-Benz or former stablemate Rolls-Royce produced.
In September 2006, leading motoring magazine Autocar said the following about the Arnage:
“It’s 48 years since the pushrod V8 engine was first used in the Bentley S2, but there is nothing antique about the way the Arnage reaches 60mph in 5.2 seconds or hits 179mph flat out. The big Bentley is a fluid and faithful handler whose 2,500kg weight proves to be an advantage. It tracks dead straight, which means you can place it with great accuracy, shaving hedges and apexes without a hint of putting a foot wrong. You can also see what’s coming from the Arnage’s lofty driving position in its glorious interior.”
And guess what, we have the pleasure to be offering for sale an Arnage T, a Black Label model no less.
