Background
The Autobianchi Bianchina is a ‘minicar’ manufactured by ‘Autobianchi’, an Italian automaker. The little minicar was based on the original Fiat 500 and remains popular with collectors due its ‘quirky’ appearance and size. Being based on the Fiat 500, they shared all mechanicals with the Italian microcar, so parts and aftermarket support was easy to source. Fiat were developing the 500 and 600 with many different variations, one of those was called the ‘Jolly’ which was essentially a beach car that was designed for the wealthy upper-classes to store on the front of their yachts. Autobianchi decided to follow suit, seeing as their car was based on the 500, it would stand to reason that the Autobianchi Bianchina ‘Jolly’ would sell equally as well. Autobianchi however, reportedly only made around 4 of the ‘Jolly’ versions of the Bianchina, this is believed to be true, although there are many home conversions that were carried out. We are unsure at the moment as to whether this is an original Jolly or a conversion.
Created around the time that Italians were becoming more and more affluent, the Italian economy growing in strength, the Bianchina ‘Jolly’ was marketed as a second car, predominantly aimed at women as a way to cruise the narrow and rough Italian streets on the way to the beach. The Jolly was a quirky, fun little beach car which is much rarer than its Fiat 500/600 counterpart.
