Background

The Autobianchi Bianchina is a ‘minicar’ manufactured by ‘Autobianchi’, an Italian automaker. The little minicar was based on the original Fiat 500 and remains popular with collectors due its ‘quirky’ appearance and size. Being based on the Fiat 500, they shared all mechanicals with the Italian microcar, so parts and aftermarket support was easy to source. Fiat were developing the 500 and 600 with many different variations, one of those was called the ‘Jolly’ which was essentially a beach car that was designed for the wealthy upper-classes to store on the front of their yachts. Autobianchi decided to follow suit, seeing as their car was based on the 500, it would stand to reason that the Autobianchi Bianchina ‘Jolly’ would sell equally as well. Autobianchi however, reportedly only made around 4 of the ‘Jolly’ versions of the Bianchina, this is believed to be true, although there are many home conversions that were carried out. We are unsure at the moment as to whether this is an original Jolly or a conversion.

Created around the time that Italians were becoming more and more affluent, the Italian economy growing in strength, the Bianchina ‘Jolly’ was marketed as a second car, predominantly aimed at women as a way to cruise the narrow and rough Italian streets on the way to the beach. The Jolly was a quirky, fun little beach car which is much rarer than its Fiat 500/600 counterpart.

Overview

This vehicle looks to have had a restoration recently, perhaps it was used as a taxi for local tourists to tour the beach front. Judging from the small details around the car this does not seem to be an original Autobianchi Jolly edition, this is however an assumption due to the lack of paperwork.

Exterior

Most of the Autobianchi Jolly’s were finished in two tone paint, but each one would have had some customisation from the factory, much like the Fiat’s. This one could be a home conversion however which would explain the single colour scheme. The car seems to have undergone some restoration work recently which results in the outside of the car being in fantastic condition. The paint has no stone chips or scratches anywhere, the chrome is bright and hasn’t faded anywhere, the wheels are in immaculate condition with what look to be relatively new Bridgestone tyres. The shut lines of the bonnet and boot are uniform as well with the brightwork and badging shining in the sun.

Interior

The inside of this Jolly is a little different from the factory originals, with upholstered seats instead of wicker ones which came as standard in all the jolly versions. Inside of this Jolly however is fantastic, looking to be brand new, as if it just rolled off the forecourt (if any of them were sold at forecourts). There are no rips, tears or discoloration of the cream and red leather trim, the carpets look to be brand new and the dash cluster and dials matching the colour scheme beautifully. The odometer reads 55074 kms which perhaps suggests that this car was once perhaps a novelty taxi for tourists, although that is pure speculation.

In the front of the car, you find the luggage space, as the car was based on the Fiat 500, which had a rear engine set up. The luggage space is clean, uncluttered and the metal work carpet and fuel tank along with the tiny spare wheel all look to be brand new as well.

Mechanical

The car presented here has the 499cc engine, producing 22 bhp, it also looks to be very clean and presentable. The underside of the Autobianchi looks to have some level of sealant and rust prevention and there looks to be very little corrosion or damage to the underside. If the underside of the car is anything like the exterior, the condition of the chassis should last a long time before needing any attention.

History

There is no history presented with the car, but there is a receipt of manufacture that documents the basic mechanical specifications from factory.

Summary

The Autobianchi Jolly Evocation was a car conceived during a time of growing prosperity with the sole reason for flaunting this newfound wealth. The whole company was created jointly by Bianchi the bicycle manufacturer, Pirelli and Fiat as a test bed for innovative concepts to see if they could be developed into mainstream Fiat vehicles. The Jolly was the ultimate expression of care-free motoring from a company that was famed for producing upmarket and forward-thinking vehicles. The Jolly is a vehicle that is not as widely known as it should be due to its very limited production, however the interest and intrigue around the brand and car itself is one of mutual interest and collaboration between three companies who ended up creating some very popular and interesting cars with strong demand and a loyal following. The Jolly should be one of those cars that re-ignites the passion whilst providing endless joy driving in the way it was created for, hopping from beach to beach in the height of the Italian summer.

We believe this Autobianchi will reach anywhere between €15,000 - €25,000.
