Background

Produced from 1964 to 1993, the Austin Mini Moke is a compact, front-wheel-drive utility and recreation vehicle originally manufactured by the British Motor Corporation and marketed by Austin. Originally designed to be a lightweight military vehicle akin to the Willys Jeeps and original Land Rovers, the low ride height and small wheels made it unsuitable for military usage.

However, repackaged as a low-cost maintenance, lightweight recreational vehicle, the Moke saw global success and gained a cult following along the way. Between 1964 and 1968, 14,518 Mokes were built in the UK. 26,000 were built in Australia between 1966 and 1981, and 10,000 were built in Portugal between 1980 and 1993 before production finally ended.

Overview

Beloved for its simple construction, the Moke’s body consists of two box-section “sideboxes” running between the front and rear wheels and include non-hollow extensions of that from the back of the car all the way to the front. These are all connected by the floor pan, the firewall, and a sturdy lateral torque box that runs under the front seats and greatly stiffens the body in torsion. The cloth canopy was an optional extra held up by a thin tubular structure that can be easily removed.

There are only three curved panels on an Austin Moke, the hood, the firewall, and the floor. All of which are curved in only one direction. This makes it easy to reproduce and replace Moke body components without needing access to sophisticated machinery.

Exterior

The exterior to this Moke is finished in Spruce Green. The paint looks excellent as evidenced by the deep reflections along all the flat body panels. There are no scratches to be seen along the sideboxes, and all four chrome wheels shine like mirrors. The tan canopy looks to be in proper shape as well. The canvas top fits snugly over its supporting architecture, and there are no holes or tears to be seen.

Interior

The inside of this Moke does not feature any creature comforts, but everything is properly in order. The cloth front seats are securely fastened to their respective mounts and show no holes or tears. The same can be said about the two back seats as well. The floormats are straight and look undamaged. The black Bakelite steering wheel is in good condition, and the speedometer is clean which is good, considering it’s the only gauge in the car. The passenger side rear view mirror is cracked.

Mechanical

The underside of this Moke is clean. There is no major damage underneath the car, and the floorboards are rust-free. That being said, there is a miniscule amount of surface corrosion on one section of the exhaust, but it is nowhere close to raising any alarms.

History

The seller purchased this Moke in 1990. It was painted Spruce Green during the purchase but since then the car has undergone a minor restoration in order to keep everything in proper condition. The hydraulics and wiring were both redone, that being said, the owner noted that the horn does not work. Sometime later, the seller had the car disassembled and repainted Spruce Green, which explains why the paint looks factory fresh. The seller put a small number of miles on the car while using it to get around in the paddocks at various racetracks.

Summary

The Austin Moke is an adorable cult car with a fantastic reputation as a beach cruiser and overall recreation vehicle. With its adorable fascia it gains fans everywhere it goes and puts a healthy grin on even the grumpiest of faces. This specific Moke has been well looked after. The paint on this car is phenomenal and the interior is neat and tidy. This beach-cruising smile machine is ready for adventure.

We are pleased to offer this vehicle for auction with an estimate between $45,000 and $55,000.
