Background

The Austin Cambridge, in its A40, A50, A55 and A60 (car) iterations, was produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1954 to 1971.

The A60, introduced with upgrades in October 1961, came with a new 1.6-litre version of the B-Series straight-four engine. Although the vehicles featured smaller rear fins than their predecessors their style continued to be referred to as ‘Farina’.

The longer, wider chassis afforded accommodation for three people on the back seat.

From 1966 onwards the A60 could be specified with a more powerful dual carburettor version in order to keep pace with European and Japanese competitors.

The A60 Cambridge was a strong seller, with 276,534 manufactured in total.

This 1968 A60 Austin Cambridge is a LHD manual model and has clearly been well looked after throughout its long life.

Chassis No: AHS9L244185M.

The car’s odometer reads 88,922 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with very little history and few service records.

We understand that the car entered the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2015.

We also understand that it was exported new to Austria in 1968 and spent most of its life in or around Salzburg.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its aesthetics, we think this 1968 A60 Austin Cambridge is in good overall condition, apart from a few issues we’ll address later.

Exterior

This sturdy-looking British saloon presents very well from most angles and the bodywork is largely free of any dents, dinks, creases, ripples or folds.

The panels are pretty straight and even, and the panel gaps and shut lines seem consistent and even.

The paint work, too, is broadly good all round.

The chrome work is decent, as are the lights, lenses, badging, wheels and most of the exterior fixtures and fittings.

There is a dent in the front wing on the driver’s side, some bubbling, cracked paint and rust at the base of the rear screen on the same side, and bubbling at the base of both rear doors.

There are some scuffs and cracks in the paint below the windscreen and around the headlamp housing on the passenger side.

Some rust can be seen inside the front door hinges and where the rear number plate would sit.

Interior

The interior is consistent with the exterior in terms of quality, authenticity and originality.

In other words, it’s really pretty good, with one or two things that might need some attention.

The upholstery is fine…except for a rip in the seat cushion on the driver’s side.

The carpets and mats seem to be in decent condition.

The door cards, although slightly baggy in places, look fundamentally sound.

The headlining has some discolouring and staining.

The wood on the dashboard has survived the passage of time with commendable style.

We can’t vouch for the efficacy or functionality of any dials, instruments, buttons, knobs, levers, switches or toggles because we haven’t tried to start or drive the car.

Mechanical

All seems to be present and correct in the engine bay, and the undersides of the car look to have a decent amount of structural integrity, as far as we can tell.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records except for what you can see in the documents section of the gallery.

There are some road tax stamps going back to the car’s early days, and a few invoices and receipts for work carried out.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of current licensing or registration certification.

Summary

There are one or two spots of bubbling to look at on the bodywork and the driver’s seat needs a repair.

Apart from that, we’d say this 1968 A60 Austin Cambridge is an impressive survivor and in good shape to provide its next owner with many years of classic motoring pleasure.

Provided, of course, that the engine, mechanicals and electrics are as good as the rest of the car.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €4,000 - €6,000.
