Fraser's review

Fraser Jackson - Consignment Specialist Message Fraser

“ Lots of recent works carried out, and it has been upgraded to a lovely 5-Speed gearbox. ”

A handsome car presented in great condition with all restorative work complete to a high standard.

Background

The Austin Healey, the bigger and more desirable car to come from the British Leyland stable, enjoys a great aftermarket enthusiast base to this day. Introduced in 1959, the 3000 was a ladder chassis with body on top, giving it great rigidity, which translated to better road handling. This not only garnered it with great praise from customers and critics but also opened up a world of success in all forms of motorsport.

The Healeys had great success in the US with its big straight six upfront driving the rear wheels, stunning styling and the later option of a 2+2. Many of the models destined for the USA are now enjoying a wonderful resale market with some even being shipped back to the UK for willing buyers.

Even today the Austin Healeys are special to behold with firms and companies dedicated to their restoration or parts supply. The Austin Healey is a legendary car from a golden age of motoring and one that will surely continue to be driven, raced and enjoyed into the future.

Overview

This Healey, made on 5th June 1962 was destined for the US market where it lived out its life before being imported back into the UK. Since being back on home soil, it has undergone work to ensure it is kept in the high standard it remains in to this day.

The body was fully rebuilt, and any welding or repair work was undertaken as well as the addition of a 5-speed gearbox. The original 4 speed gearbox is included with the sale however, just in need of a recondition should the next owner want the car returned to original specification.

Purchased by the current owner in 2019 from an auction in London, there has been only one previous owner in the UK. With the previous owner acquiring the car in 2012, it stands to reason that the Healey was imported around that time.

Exterior

Finished in Ivory white with a red interior and a black roof, the original colour combination the car left the factory with. The car presents splendidly in its timeless colour scheme with only minor imperfections to note.

Starting from the top down, the black hood looks to be in excellent condition with no obvious rips, tears or damage. The back window looks to be in good condition too with no damage again. It’s reported that the operation of the hood both up and down is smooth and the fabric looks to be tight and well fitting.

The body of the car is in great shape after receiving comprehensive work by Rawles Motorsport in regard to a full commission in terms of metalwork. Any sections that needed repair have been removed with sections rewelded to fend off body rot over here on the wet, salted UK roads.

The chrome work looks superb against the white paint work and all chrome trim looks to be in great condition with minimal pitting or damage. Nicely rounded off with the wire wheels which again are looking to be in great condition, wrapped in tyres that have plenty of tread and look to be relatively new additions.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the red interior trim contrasts nicely against the Ivory white exterior colour with the condition of the interior matching that of the exterior. The leather inside looks to be in excellent condition with the white dial faces and wooden trimmed steering wheel being nice retro additions.

The seats are again in good condition with no rips, tears or damage. There is a small section on the driver’s side bolster that looks to have been scratched or scuffed but it doesn’t look to have broken the leather.

Carpet and door card are again matching the condition of the rest of the interior with the dash also presenting in the same condition. All electrics are reported to be working as are the dials, gauges, steering wheel and other major touch points.

Mechanical

Mechanically the car is reported to be running well and the car was driven to us here in Oxford from Chelmsford, which is always a good sign for a good running and driving car. Under the bonnet, the engine is painted in an olive-green colour and the engine bay shows no signs of fluid leaks or hasty cover ups.

There are no obvious signs of split hoses, exposed wires or damage to components in the bay. In the invoices, there is record of a new wiring loom fitted to the car due to burnt wires presenting a fire risk. A good sign this car should now be fit for the future then with reliable wiring fitted by professionals.

Elsewhere for the mechanicals, the 5-speed gearbox is working well and with the choice of both the 5 -speed and 4-speed box, the new owner should have the best of both worlds.

History

The car comes with a history file, mostly from its time in the UK, with some paperwork from a Florida based company that the current owner believes to be the exporters, as well as one invoice from a company in Alabama along with the DMV document from the same state.

Since being in the UK however the car has received a swathe of parts and work, much of the miscellaneous parts needed for the recondition of the Healey came from AH Spares in Warwickshire. With Rawles Motorsport completing the recommission work with regards to the mechanical, electrical and bodywork needed after the Healey’s 61 years on the road.

Please do take some time to look through the photo gallery to familiarise yourself with the work this car has received.

Summary

A handsome car presented in great condition with all restorative work complete to a high standard. Now ready for its renewed life to begin here in the UK, this Healey would be perfect for summer journeys to Europe, being LHD. We’re sure it will find a great home here at Bonhams|Cars Online HQ when it goes live for auction soon.
