Background
Many regard the Audi RS 6 Avant as the ultimate daily, but don’t forget it has a little brother, which also offers a powerful punch as well as offering a big boot. The Audi RS 4 has been in production since 1999, and is currently in its fourth generation – model code B9. The model going under the hammer here is the third generation - model code B8. Unlike the current Audi RS 4, the B8 makes use of a naturally aspirated V8, offering 4.2 litres of displacement, whereas the latest version has a more polar-bear-friendly turbocharged 2.9 litre V6.
The 8-cylinder powerplant is good for 450hp along with 430Nm, which as you would expect, is fed to all four wheels thanks to Audi’s iconic quattro setup, via a 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission. 62mph is achieved in just 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is predictably limited to 155mph, although if the right option was selected at the time, it could be increased to over 170mph – handy for an airport run on the Autobahn!
The B8 Audi RS 4 saw its debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, entering production in the same year until 2015. Compared to the standard A4 and the S4, the RS 4 featured remodelled front and rear bumpers along with wider arches to allow for the wider track and larger alloys. Speaking of which, the car came as standard with 19” alloys, or as an option, 20” could be selected. No matter the size, the car would roll off the production line with Pirelli P Zero Tyres.
Cast iron brake discs with Brembo calipers were as standard, but carbon ceramic brakes were available as an option for those who wanted to push the car even harder, for longer. A Sports Pack was also available, which gave owners a sports exhaust as well as the Dynamic Ride Control, often referred to DRC for short.
