“ Stunning - Excellent Spec and History - Pano Roof ”

Cars like this are very desirable as not only do they offer the kind of performance that would put some sports cars – or even some supercars – to shame, but there is space for five and a big boot, giving the car a wide breadth of ability. On top of that, you have plenty of mod cons and refinement to make longer journeys far less arduous, plus a V8 soundtrack for when you get bored of listening to the Bang and Olufsen sound system!

This is a very well-presented example that has clearly been looked after, meaning the next owner simply has to tax and insure it, fuel it and drive away, enjoying the V8 noise in the process. As well as offering great condition inside and out, this example has some desirable optional extras such as the panoramic roof, heated front seats, privacy glass and Bang and Olufsen sound system to name a few.

If you’re on the market for a fast wagon then this should definitely command your attention. The estimate for this fast German estate is £23,000-£28,000 and if you ask us, that is a lot of car for the money.

Background

Many regard the Audi RS 6 Avant as the ultimate daily, but don’t forget it has a little brother, which also offers a powerful punch as well as offering a big boot. The Audi RS 4 has been in production since 1999, and is currently in its fourth generation – model code B9. The model going under the hammer here is the third generation - model code B8. Unlike the current Audi RS 4, the B8 makes use of a naturally aspirated V8, offering 4.2 litres of displacement, whereas the latest version has a more polar-bear-friendly turbocharged 2.9 litre V6.

The 8-cylinder powerplant is good for 450hp along with 430Nm, which as you would expect, is fed to all four wheels thanks to Audi’s iconic quattro setup, via a 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission. 62mph is achieved in just 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is predictably limited to 155mph, although if the right option was selected at the time, it could be increased to over 170mph – handy for an airport run on the Autobahn!

The B8 Audi RS 4 saw its debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, entering production in the same year until 2015. Compared to the standard A4 and the S4, the RS 4 featured remodelled front and rear bumpers along with wider arches to allow for the wider track and larger alloys. Speaking of which, the car came as standard with 19” alloys, or as an option, 20” could be selected. No matter the size, the car would roll off the production line with Pirelli P Zero Tyres.

Cast iron brake discs with Brembo calipers were as standard, but carbon ceramic brakes were available as an option for those who wanted to push the car even harder, for longer. A Sports Pack was also available, which gave owners a sports exhaust as well as the Dynamic Ride Control, often referred to DRC for short.

Overview

The example we have on offer is a 2014 version finished in menacing Phantom Black, which is able to boast just one former keeper, main dealer service history and goodies such as a panoramic roof, heated front seats plus Bang and Olufsen sound system. This model has just one former keeper with a current mileage a little over 62,000 miles.

Not only does the presentation of the car highlight the care that it’s received over the years, but the MoT history also presents strong evidence of this. The car has numerous passes with no advisories and the only one failure it has received was down to a bulge in a tyre – easily rectifiable.

Exterior

Finished in Phantom Black with the optional 20” alloys, this is a fast wagon that looks the business and thanks to that V8 it goes like it as well. The exterior is as well presented as the interior, with little to report in regard to damage. The alloys do have some age-related scuffs, but nothing that seriously detracts from the overall package, and they can simply be refurbished if desired by the next owner.

With this being the RS 4 variant, there is a more aggressive, wider styling compared to the A4 and the S4, meaning, there is no mistaking this when you see this lurking in the car park. Unlike the S4, which features a quadruple exhaust setup (two either side, of course), the RS 4 goes for a simpler double exhaust setup – one either side. It’s true what they say, less is more.

The front features a large honeycomb singleframe grille with the RS 4 badge nestled within it, and the grille is flanked by sharp headlights with LED elements. The Phantom Black paintwork is contrasted with silver mirror caps to help further to mark this version out as the RS variant.

Interior

Audi is well known for making, classy interiors and this RS 4 is no exception. Open the doors and you’ll be greeted by plenty of leather and Alcantara, which is complemented by RS badging and glorious carbon fibre inlays. The seats are in fantastic condition; free of any wear or tears – proof that the car has been well looked after. The front seats are heated, as well as offering electronic adjustability, finished off with the RS 4 insignia on the backrests.

Like the seats, the steering wheel and gearknob are also in fantastic condition, free from any damage – both of which bear the RS badging with pride. The back seats also look superb, even as if they have never been sat in, and all the floor mats are hoovered with enough precision to make the most anal German designer happy.

The switchgear is another area that has stood the test of time well, both on the centre console and on the flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel. All of this is lit wonderfully by the inclusion of the panoramic roof, which brings natural light to an otherwise dark cabin. Other features inside the cabin include dual-zone climate control, automatic lights, drive select, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, navigation, and Audi’s MMI system.

Mechanical

As mentioned, the beating heart of the Audi RS 4 Avant is the 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 petrol, offering 450hp along with 430Nm torque. Predictably, this snarling power is fed to all four wheels via Audi’s iconic quattro all-wheel drive system, and a 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission. 62mph can be achieved in under five seconds, and if the right option is selected, the top speed is over 170mph.

Lift up the bonnet and you’ll see the V8 in its glory, in what is a very clean engine bay – testament that this car has been looked after. Speaking of which, this example benefits from Audi main dealer service history and has just one former keeper. The last service was carried out a main dealer July 2022, in which an interim service was completed.

A car like this needs to be looked after and as you can see from the way in which this example is presented, that looks to be the case here. The last service was carried out by Chingford Audi, in which the engine oil and filter were changed in July 2022. The same service was also carried in 2021, also at Chingford Audi, along with an MoT. March 2021 saw two vent hoses replaced, once more by Chingford Audi.

The Audi RS 4 is driven by a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt, meaning you won’t need to worry about service intervals as in theory the timing chain should last the lifetime of the car. September 2020 saw Chingford Audi carry another interim service along with a pollen filter replacement, a brake fluid change and a thermostat control unit.

Chingford Audi carried out a major service in February 2019 along with spark plug replacement, brake fluid change, gearbox oil change and rear diff oil change. Bexley Audi changed the oil and filter in September 2017, and the same dealer carried out software update on the gearbox control unit in June 2015.

This car has also been looked after by Uncle Tom’s Motoring Centre, between 2020 and 2022. Within that time they have replaced the front and rear brake pads, as well as tyres, using Pirelli to match what the car had fitted from factory.

History

As mentioned, this Audi RS 4 Avant has just one former keeper, and has been maintained to a high standard. This example boasts main dealer service history as well as an impressive MoT history as well. The current MoT is valid until September this year, and almost every prior MoT has passed with flying colours apart from one year, where the nearside front tyre needed replacing due to a bulge.

The car comes with documentation such as the original sales invoice, original manuals and service book along with two keys. This example has also been fitted with a Ghost alarm and tracker, which will give peace of mind to the next owner. The car also comes with roof rack mountings enabling the next owner to make this supercar-slaying estate even more versatile. This example has covered a little over 62,000 miles, so it still has plenty of life left it – good mileage for the age.
