Background

The convertible Virage Volante first showed its face at the 1990 Birmingham Motor Show. Then a two-seater, it became a 2+2 by the time of its appearance at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show.

The Virage was a very expensive, exclusive, hand-built car. It was also powerful and fast, with a 32-valve 5.3L V8 delivering 330bhp. In automatic guise, the Virage could reach 100 kph in about 6.5 seconds.

The five-speed ZF manual gearbox was fitted to about forty percent of the 1,050 cars produced. For the 1993 model year, the more popular three-speed auto box unit was replaced by a four-speed automatic unit.

According to which source you consult, only 224 or 233 Virage Volantes were ever built.

Later iterations included Vantage and Vantage Le Mans options, with power ultimately raised to a formidable 604bhp in the latter, which was said to be capable of reaching 62mph in 3.9 seconds.

Built in 2000, this LHD manual Aston Martin Virage Volante was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2007.

Prior to that, we know that the car was in Germany.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic status.

This low-kilometres car is in excellent overall condition and presents extremely well from every angle.

Odometer: 41,318 km.

VIN: SCFDAM2C8XBL89046

Exterior

The bodywork and paintwork are very good in general.

There are no dinks, dents or creases of any significance on the bodywork.

The black paintwork has retained much of its original shine and lustre.

The hood is in fine condition, as are the wheels, lights, badging and most exterior trim.

There are a few stone chips at the front of the bonnet and around the front valance.

A rubber seal at the rear of the hood on the passenger’s side is lifting up slightly.

Those very minor flaws aside, the exterior of this car is very hard to fault.

Interior

The interior looks wholly original, authentic and virtually as good as new.

The brown leather upholstery is in fine condition. The seats, front and back, are supportive and comfortable.

The hood lining is pristine, as are the door cards, save for the odd scuff here and there.

The wood and veneers are as rich and glossy as you would hope.

The steering wheel, gear lever, centre console, dashboard and instruments all look to be in fine order.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

The door on the storage flap above the glove compartment doesn’t close properly.

A tiny section of the dashboard padding at the top of the air vent on the passenger side is a little worn.

The boot looks very good and contains a wind deflector and tonneau cover.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is clean, dry and seems to be in its right and proper place.

The engine, we’re told by a plaque attached to it, was hand-built by Chris Bennett.

The undersides of the car appear to be in very good condition.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

The registration documentation shown is original.

Summary

This is one of the last of the truly hand-built Aston Martins. It is in excellent condition, has covered a low number of kilometres and is a rare and prestigious piece of automotive engineering history from one of the world’s great marques.

We think you’ll like it as much as we do - provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of it.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €40,000 - €60,000.
