Background

In 1967, Aston Martin had a larger, more modern looking design ready to replace the DB6, but they had no engine. They released the car with the straight-six Vantage engine from the DB6, and the car became known as the DBS. Two years later, a V8 engine was ready and the DBS V8 was introduced. By 1973 the straight-six was phased out and the car became known as the V8. The V8 is a grand tourer manufactured by Aston Martin from 1969 to 1989. The cars were hand-built, a regular practice with classic Astons, and each car required roughly 1200 man-hours to complete. Approximately 4,021 units were constructed.

Overview

This V8 is from 1974, meaning it is a Series 3. These cars are distinguished by a taller hood scoop which is used to conceal four twin-choke Weber carburetors. The car produces roughly 288hp and has an automatic transmission.

Exterior

The exterior of this V8 Vantage Saloon is finished in Oxford Blue, and it is beautiful in the light, but it is far from flawless. The paint on this V8 is riddled with tens of thousands of crow’s feet scratches that are all around the car. There is a larger crack in the paint up above the grille on the passenger side of the hood. The passenger side headlight has a number of scratches in the paint surrounding it. The driver’s door has paint chips at both the front and back. While we do love this shade of Oxford Blue, it is a fact that this car is in dire need of a respray.

Interior

The interior of this car is wonderful for a vehicle rapidly approaching 50 years of age. The details look a little tired, but nothing is greatly damaged. The fawn leather seats are in great shape. The driver’s seat is creased in certain areas but there are no holes or tears to speak of. The passenger seat shows very little wear at all. The rear seats look excellent. The center console looks slightly dusty aside from the aftermarket Sony stereo, but the same cannot be said about the dashboard which looks excellent. The wooden inlays are in phenomenal shape compared to the rest of the interior and there are no imperfections to speak of regarding the dash pad either. The leather wrapped steering wheel could use a healthy coat of polish, but there is no real damage to be seen. The Onslow Blue floor mats look highly unique and really make the inside of this car pop.

Mechanical

There is no major damage to be seen underneath the car. The floorboards are all clean, but there is some surface corrosion on the exhaust pipes.

History

The car was built for US Specifications instead of a conversion. This Aston was shipped to the United States in January of 1978 and purchased in May of that year. The car was kept in Cupertino, California before being acquired by the seller sometime later.

Summary

The Aston Martin V8 is a wonderful car. A classic British sports car with muscular American design is a winning formula. This car is in great condition, and a proper respray would bring this car up to excellent condition. This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a cool and obscure car without having to do too much rehabilitation work before it’s ready to start attending and winning shows.
