Background

In 1967, Aston Martin had a larger, more modern looking design ready to replace the DB6, but they had no engine. They released the car with the straight-six Vantage engine from the DB6, and the car became known as the DBS. Two years later, a V8 engine was ready and the DBS V8 was introduced. By 1973 the straight-six was phased out and the car became known as the V8. The V8 is a grand tourer manufactured by Aston Martin from 1969 to 1989. The cars were hand-built, a regular practice with classic Astons, and each car required roughly 1200 man-hours to complete. Approximately 4,021 units were constructed.

Overview

This Aston is from 1979 meaning it is a Series 4, more commonly referred to as the Oscar India. The Series 4 debuted at the Birmingham International Motor Show and can be identified by the “power bulge” on the hood which replaced the raised hood scoop found on the Series 3 V8s.

Exterior

The outside of this V8 is finished in a fantastic shade of gun metal gray. It shall be said multiple times throughout this listing, this car is a project. However, we were particularly surprised by how well the paint has been preserved. This V8 also has some kind of performance package, coming with an extended front bumper and ducktail spoiler at the rear. It is quite aggressive looking; we absolutely love it. Another area worth mentioning are the wheels. All four of them appear to have been plasti-dipped, and the plasti-dip on all four wheels appears to now be peeling off.

Interior

The inside is the real problem area. The interior to this beautiful V8 has been torn apart. The leather on the driver and passenger seats have cracked in certain areas, all the way through to the foam. A huge chunk of leather is missing from the driver’s seat, and some of the exposed foam has been torn away as well. This trend of cracked leather continues up the backrests of both seats as well. The rear seats are actually in good condition, but whatever panel held the backrests is now gone. Likely to make space for all of the boxes stored inside. It should be mentioned that this vehicle comes with a ton of spare parts, likely belonging to the car itself. All the contents stored in the car have been documented and the photographs are available below. The door panels are also missing. The steering wheel has seen better days as some of the stitching appears to be coming loose. The dashboard and gauges are clean. The radio appears to have been removed. No floormats means a better view of the floorboards, which don’t seem to be suffering from any corrosion damage.

Mechanical

The underside of this vehicle is clean but not spotless. There do appear to be one or two areas suffering from surface corrosion. Neither part seems to be deteriorating in any way though. As far as damage goes, there does not appear to any sort of major damage underneath the vehicle.

Although we haven’t started the engine, we have turned it by hand and can say that it isn’t seized.

History

This V8 was delivered to Marietta, Georgia in 1978, and was originally painted Raven Black, built to US specifications, and came with standard Avon tires. The car eventually made its way up to New Jersey and was painted Slate Blue Metallic along the way. When the car was purchased by the seller in 2011, the odometer read 79,608 miles. Sometime between 2011 and 2021 the car received a third paintjob and went from Slate Blue to the Gun Metal Gray shade it currently sports.

Summary

The Aston Martin V8’s are an epic fusion of British athleticism and muscular American styling. With so many of the parts missing being present in boxes, this is absolutely a project worth taking on. However, we should be clear in saying that all the parts won’t leave you with a 100% completed car, but it should get you at least 70% of the way there, potentially. Should you bravely accept the challenge this Aston presents, you will certainly be rewarded on the other side with one fantastic-looking British muscle car.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
