Background

The DBS steered Aston away from the classical, organic shapes of the Carrozzeria Touring styled DB4, 5, and 6, driving cutting edge late 1960’s design with crisper, more rectilinear lines frequently credited to Gandini’s watershed Alfa Carrabo of 1968.

The last Aston to use brilliant in-house engineer Tadek Marek’s twin-cam straight-six, the DBS was built side-by-side with its Kamm-tailed DB6 “predecessor” for three years, and would later come to define Aston’s signature look for more than three decades.

Produced with more than a year’s worth of man hours in labor, these cars wear hand-beaten aluminum bodywork over the marque’s first fully independently suspended chassis, and starred alongside Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Overview

One of fewer than 1,000 DBS’s built over a six year production run, this left-hand drive 1969 example came to life alongside the final batches of DB6.

The car’s scarcity is made even greater by its Vantage spec, which added triple dual-choke, large-bore Weber carburetors which raised power of the 4.0 liter six from 280 to 325 hp. This was a hugely impressive figure for the day, and identical to that boasted by early Euro-spec 5.3 liter V8 models.

Exterior

This example is stunning in medium blue, displaying complete and accurate factory trim throughout. The car’s condition is just as impressive in person as in photos.

Though its sharp-creased sheet metal pointed the way forward, the DBS kept one foot (or four) firmly in the past with factory knock-off wire wheels, and charmingly quirky hallmarks of low production abound, from dual fuel filler doors to incredibly intricate window trim moldings.

Interior

The car presents just as beautifully inside, and wood veneers surrounding instrumentation adds a lot of warmth–many examples of the DBS left the factory with blank black plastic and metal gauge pods.

Note the period head unit, a/c controls, and beautiful navy blue piping.

Mechanical

Power comes from a twin-cam 4.0 liter straight-six topped with the correct trio of Vantage-spec twin-choke Weber carburetors.

Rated at 325 hp, up 45 from the standard-spec DBS, this motor enabled sub 6.5-second 0-60 runs when coupled to the 5-speed manual of the auction car. This was true supercar territory for the day, and on par with a contemporary Lamborghini Miura or Ferrari Daytona.

History

This car is offered with limited history.

Summary

Rare, fast, beautiful, historically significant, and ideally specced for North American enthusiasts, this DBS Vantage checks all the right boxes and then some.

Estimated $80,000 - $120,000.
