Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ A fabulous, cherished, low mileage example of a seminal convertible Aston Martin. ”

Finished in Meteorite Silver and with less than 30,000 miles and exemplary service history, this contemporary high-tech Aston offers the best of all worlds - useable, practical, fast, and stunningly beautiful. Oh yes, and don't forget the fabulous DB07 ACE plate comes with it too!

Background

Launched in 2003 as successor to the DB7, the DB9 was the first model to be built at Aston Martin's new factory at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Like its DB7 predecessor, the DB9 was styled by Ian Callum.

The DB9 is powered by a development of the 5.9-litre, 48-valve, V12 engine found in the DB7 Vantage, which produced 470bhp, an output sufficient to propel the Volante from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.

The aluminium engine is mounted as far back as possible in the chassis while the transmission/final drive is positioned ahead of the rear axle, resulting in 85% of the car's mass being sited between the axles and a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution.

The DB9 Volante is built on the same platform as its coupé sibling but features a stiffer chassis to compensate for the absence of a metal roof.

The Volante also has protective pop-up hoops behind the rear seats and stronger ‘A’ pillars.

Overview

This 2007 Aston Martin DB9 Volante ticks all the right boxes.

It is in fine condition.

It has all the right stamps, bills and receipts to attest to proper, diligent maintenance and a life well curated without concern for expense.

It has yet to get much past 29,000 miles despite being 16 years old.

On the occasion of its 2013 MoT a decade ago, it had covered 13,841 miles.

So, as you can tell, the car has been used regularly, but sparingly, over the years.

Purchased by the vendor from Aston Martin main dealer Stratstone in 2015 (about 10,000 miles ago), this Meteorite Silver with a black hood Volante has been kept warm and dry ever since, and has been given a Bluetooth audio streaming upgrade (by Stratstone).

It was supplied new with satellite navigation, high-spec alarm, front stone guards, seat belts in ‘Warm Charcoal’, veneers in ‘Piano Black’, and ‘Obsidian Black’ interior trim and upholstery.

We have driven the car and can state with confidence that this feels properly sorted and very well screwed together. It is balanced and poised, and the steering is weighted just right.

It presses on with all the enthusiasm you would hope and expect of a pedigree 6.0-litre V12 Aston Martin.

Your author drove it with the roof down on a sunny day and can vouch for the ability of that glorious V12 to create a soundtrack that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and surrender.

Fabulous.

If that’s still not quite enough to whet your appetite, consider the number plate that comes with the car – DB07ACE.

Exterior

The bodywork is really very good and there are no dents, creases or dinks of any significance to report anywhere that we can see.

The shut-lines and panel gaps are as crisp and consistent as you could wish.

The Meteorite Silver is, we think, very classy in a tastefully understated way and it’s retained plenty of depth of shine and lustre.

The amount of road rash or stone chips visible on this car – hardly any – is far more a reflection of its very low mileage than its age and speaks to a life lived carefully in the hands of diligent owners.

We found a small paint chip on top of the o/s/f wing and a few light scuffs at the very base of the front valance, where you’d be surprised not to find them.

Beyond that, we found no other blemishes or marks save for the odd one or two on the headlamp cowls.

The wheels are in fine condition and seem to be unacquainted with any kerbs or other hazards.

The tyres look to have plenty of life left in them.

The black fabric hood fits, stows and goes up and down as promised.

Aside from a couple of creases and some small scuffs to the fabric above the driver’s window, it’s all good with the hood.

The lights, lenses, badging, trim and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all in fine fettle.

In summary, it’s all really impressive.

Interior

The good news continues uninterrupted on the inside.

The ‘Obsidian Black’ leather upholstery is supportive and comfortable.

Obviously, we’re talking about the front seats – the rears in any DB9 are only comfortable if you’re a 4-year-old child or a small-to-medium sized family pet with no mobility issues.

There are a few creases and some scuffs to the leather on the door-side bolster on the driver’s seat back-rest.

The door cards are in fine fettle, as is the light grey roof lining.

So, too, are the carpets and mats.

We found a couple of small scuffs to the metal around the ashtray on the transmission tunnel, plus a couple of marks on the speaker grille between the rear ‘seats’.

We pressed a few buttons and flipped a few switches as we were driving around, and the vendor assures us that even the ones we didn’t press or flip will work as intended.

The boot looks very good and contains the original wind deflector.

Mechanical

The engine bay looks clean, dry and as you would hope to find in a car that’s yet to exceed 30,000 miles. Everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car seem to have plenty of structural integrity, unsurprisingly on such a low-mileage, well maintained car.

History

This splendid DB9 Volante comes with a service book full of Aston Martin (Stratstone) stamps up to 2015, when the car was bought by the vendor.

On 30.6.16 and 9.7.17 it was serviced by Aston Martin Reading.

Since then, he has gone down the route of respected independent specialists and there are bills, receipts and invoices covering all work and maintenance carried out to date.

It was last serviced on 31.3.22.

Its MoT is valid until 5.4.24

It comes with a handbook pack and 2 sets of keys.

Summary

We think this is very fine example of both the marque and the model.

The vendor said he has such faith in the car’s condition that he’d happily sell it to a friend – which is always worth knowing.

It’s condition, mileage and service history are all working hard in its favour, in our opinion.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of £35,000 - £45,000.
