“ Requires assembly. But what a project! ”

Body prepared and painted already.  It looks like all parts included.

Background

"The Aston Martin DB2/4 is an expensive car designed to cater for the connoisseur of sports cars who is not limited by financial considerations." - Autocar, 2nd October 1953.

With the introduction of the '2+2' DB2/4 in October 1953, Aston Martin extended the DB2's appeal to the hitherto untapped yet increasingly important market comprised of 'sports car enthusiasts with a family'.

By modifying the rear of the chassis and reducing the fuel tank capacity from 19 to 17 gallons, Aston's engineers liberated sufficient space within the existing design for two child-sized occasional rear seats. Alternatively, the rear seat backs could be folded down, thus creating a load-carrying platform that more than doubled the luggage space. The latter could be accessed via the 2/4's opening rear door, a pioneering example of the now commonplace 'hatchback' concept.

"This transformation gives the Aston Martin DB2/4 an unrivalled luggage-carrying capacity in a car which should be capable in favourable circumstances of achieving two miles a minute," reported The Motor. "The DB2/4 can truthfully claim to be the fastest car in the world capable of carrying two people with a month's luggage."

In addition, a raised roofline, one-piece windscreen, larger bumpers and other detail styling changes differentiated the newcomer from its predecessor. Otherwise, the DB2/4 remained much the same as the DB2, employing the latter's rectangular-tube chassis, trailing arm independent front suspension and well-located live rear axle.

Bodies were supplied by Mulliners of Birmingham until the advent of the MkII version in October 1955, when Tickford - recently acquired by Aston Martin's owner, David Brown - took over.Designed at Lagonda by Willy Watson, under the supervision of W O Bentley, the 2.6-litre, six-cylinder, twin-cam power unit came in tuned (125bhp) Vantage specification as standard for the 2/4.

Overview

This LHD DB2/4 MK I is one of just 565 built.

The body has been stripped back, restored to first-class condition and painted in the car’s original shade of ‘Sea Green’.

The engine and chassis are matching numbers items.

The car is currently affixed via the chassis to a custom-made dolly so that it may be moved around.

Three large wooden crates accompany the car and contain what appear to be full sets of engine, suspension, steering, braking, chrome, trim and other original components.

This vehicle is currently in storage at CARS Europe BV. If you require a quote for shipping anywhere in the world, please contact them direct (details below).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their legal proof of purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It must be collected within 7-days of the auction end. Storage charges (€70 + local VAT per car per week) will commence from the sixth day following the auction end.  These must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Exterior

The bodywork is entirely straight and there are no aberrations, dents or dinks to contemplate.

Evidently, all and any issues have been addressed and the bodywork and chassis look to us to be in excellent order.

The car comes with 9 wheels, 5 of which have tyres.

Interior

The bodywork is a shell and, consequently, there’s no interior to describe.

Mechanical

The engine is disassembled and in one of three crates, which together contain the suspension, gearbox, braking, steering and other mechanical components, plus the floor-pan sections and sundry items of trim.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

It does, however, come with a photocopy of a British Motor Industry Heritage (BMIH) certificate which states that the car was exported new to a US dealership by the name of J. Inskip in October 1953.

The certificate also tells us that the car was originally ‘Sea Green’ with a ‘Beige’ interior, and confirms that the chassis and engine numbers are matching.

There are various photocopies of Mississippi title documents with the car (there is no original title).

Summary

With the exception of the seats, upholstery and interior trim, we think this car is pretty much complete and now requires expert assembly.

Much of the hard work of preparing the bodyshell, stripping the engine, etc, has been done.

From what we can see, this fine and very rare Aston Martin has all the integrity and promise (and parts) required to make it a highly engaging and rewarding project.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of €40,000 - €50,000.

The car is currently in storage, you can see a picture of the collection as it stands today at the very bottom of the photo gallery.
