“ 8-Cyl, 6.5L Diesel w/ Whipple Supercharger! ”

Despite the age and absolute lack of logical reason why anyone would buy this, the Hummer H1 is an undeniably cool vehicle. At an estimated value of between $45,000 and $60,000, it's a chance to own something that sits at the top of the food chain as far as everyday vehicles go. The improvements made on this 1994 vehicle are bound to make living with the Hummer H1 even better: better AC, leather seats, a supercharged engine, etc. Plus you know that you want it!

Background

There's probably no reason why the Hummer H1 exists in civilian configuration; it wasn't made for everyday tasks, the size was humungous for the road, the fuel economy was not too pocket-friendly, and in certain regards, a bit of an overkill. There's also no reason why the Hummer H1 shouldn't have been made for the civilian market: more than three decades after its arrival, it continues to be one of the coolest cars ever produced. As a classic, its appeal only increases — and the trend is likely to continue for millennia. And as far as one's listening to the heart, the Hummer H1 will always find its way to the driveway.

Overview

Listed here is a 1994 AM General Hummer H1. Finished in a striking shade of red (no it's not as marvelous as on a Ferrari, but this doesn't have to be!) with a gray interior, this Hummer H1 was manufactured in 1994, making it one of the 718 examples made in 1994 and also one of just 47 specced with a gray interior, mentions the seller. Apart from the optional extras ticked when new, this H1 has also been fitted with a Whipple Supercharger making it more powerful than the standard-spec 6.5-liter model. It has done 97,991 miles and has some other small changes carried out during its life, more about which you can read below.

Exterior

Only if you're coming from the HMMMV (or Humvee) will the Hummer H1 look a bit less intimidating. At just under 200 inches long, it's quite a sizable thing, the H1. And at 86 inches in width, there's no way anyway can ignore the presence of one — even when it's resting quietly in its parking spot. This red car is said to be sprayed with the Rhino liner coating, which not just gives it a unique look but also makes it less susceptible to corrosion, adds the seller. Not that the Hummer H1 needed any more attention, but the coating does make it appear more distinct.

Interior

Like the Humvee, the Hummer H1 also has individual seats, and what appears like a football field between the seats. This isn't a space issue as the SUV is so inherently wide that it wouldn't matter if the seats were further pushed apart. This is no modern Range Rover, so don't expect to see wood and leather; it's instead plastic, utilitarian instruments, and some more plastic. A bad thing? Not quite. A bad thing in a Hummer? No way! This 1994 H1 has been equipped with a fair bit of extras to make it quite comfortable: power windows, power locks, power mirrors, etc. There's a new HVAC system, new glovebox, and leather/Alcantara seats done recently, adds the seller.

Mechanical

Powering the 1994 Hummer H1 was a 6.5-liter V8 diesel engine, which made about 160 hp and about 300 lb. ft. of max torque. While those numbers won't put a hot hatchback to shame, it was the off-road credentials that made the Hummer H1 what it was. To give you an idea, it was offered with a whopping 16 inches of ground clearance. It could very easily climb the unclimbable, traverse the most difficult of conditions, and come out unscathed.

The example available here has been made a bit more potent with the inclusion of a Whipple Supercharger kit. The seller mentions that the exhaust has been re-routed with an added catalyst now behind the rear bumper.

History

AM General began selling the civilian version of the Hummer H1 in 1992 and continued till about 1999 or so, which is when GM took over, selling more than 11,000 examples in total. The majority of these were wagons. The 1994 model (that we have here) benefitted from some mechanical improvements and a larger engine.

Summary

Despite the age and absolute lack of logical reason why anyone would buy this, the Hummer H1 is an undeniably cool vehicle. At an estimated value of between $45,000 and $60,000, it's a chance to own something that sits at the top of the food chain as far as everyday vehicles go. The improvements made on this 1994 vehicle are bound to make living with the Hummer H1 even better: better AC, leather seats, a supercharged engine, etc. Plus you know that you want it!
