Overview

Listed here is an Alvis Saracen in an unmodified state.

Exterior

The Saracen was responsible for both army duties at the border/in war conflicts as well as policing roles. Its design looks similar to that of a conventional off-road vehicle, especially in profile, thanks in part to the long hood. The APC itself is nearly 5 meters long, which makes the cabin suitable to seat eight troops. There's a turret, which, depending on the version, can have a gun mounted atop it, in addition to one that can be strapped at the rear. Access to the troop area is through a rear door.

Interior

For the driver, the cab can be accessed through a large hatch up front. Behind that is the provision for the commander and radio control personnel. The section behind is large enough to seat eight troops. There are firing hatches on both sides and on the rear doors as well. Please note: Our photographer did not shoot the inside as the crew were unable to open the Alvis on the day of the photoshoot.

Mechanical

The Alvis Saracen shares its platform with vehicles like the Saladin, Salamander, etc. It belongs to the FV600 family. Powering the FV603 (or the Saracen) was an eight-cylinder Rolls Royce B80 gas engine. This made 160 hp or so and helped the Saracen achieve a driving range of 400 km and an impressive permissible top speed of 72 km/h (and the equivalent of 45 mph).

History

The Saracen is said to be the first-of-its-kind vehicle made by Britain during the Cold War. It was produced from 1952 onward, and found use with various army and police forces across the globe. According to Tanks-Encyclopedia, it was retired in the 90s, and nearly 2,000 Saracens were produced between 1952 and 1976 when its production was reportedly stopped. Odometer shows 3,014 miles.

Summary

The Alvis Saracen was an important APC to come out of Britain — not just as a product but because of its presence during wars and unrest. The example featured here is estimated to be valued between $4,000 and $8,000.

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'. This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
