Background

The GTA V6 is the first car built by Alpine after Renault's acquisition of the prestigious french brand. Introduced to the public during the 1985 edition of the Geneva International Motor Show as a Porsche 944 competitor, the heir of the A310 was immediately noted for its peculiar design, with its impressive cd of just 0.28 (0.30 in the Turbo version) and the wide use of polyester and fibreglass to reduce its weight. The Grand Tourisme Alpine was no slouch either: based on a steel wishbone chassis and powered either by a 2869cc "PRV" V6 engine with a maximum power output of 160hp or a more powerful 200hp 2458cc turbo unit, this Alpine's performance was comparable, if not better, than that of its direct competitor. However the styling and quality of the interior, and the idea that it was nothing more than a "sportier" Renault instead of a pure bred Alpine car like the iconic A110 or the previous A310 hindered its sales. Because of this, and the fact that its relatively low price and running costs made the owners enjoy driving the car with little care, nowadays good, low mileage examples are exceedingly rare to find.

Overview

The car in this auction is a 1989 Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo, with the more desirable PRV 2458cc V6 engine, finished in red and with a little over 45000km on the odometer. This car never left the town where it was first registered in 1989 and has been stored by its last owner, who apparently had it for around 20 years, in a climate controlled private museum.

The extensive documentation included with the sale, like the car's various carnets and invoices, further attests the love and care this car was subjected to.

Exterior

This Renault Alpine GTA V6, which is well preserved and unrestored, is in outstanding conditions on the outside. The paint is free of any appreciable defects, save from some thin stone chips and some barely noticeable chipping on the rear hatch's lower right side. The colour, which we believe to be the gorgeous rouge 075, still has its original depth and shine and would only need a thorough polish to remove some barely visible holograms in order to be considered perfect. The big, rectangular headlights and their transparent covers, which are only found on non-USDM cars, are almost as clear as the day they left the factory, with no real signs of fading or yellowing to detract from their great conditions. The front alpine emblem isn't faded and the enamel is in almost pristine conditions. The tail lights, with their integrated reverse and turn signal bezels and the rectangular grille that separates them creating the effect of a one-piece rear fascia are equally well preserved and work as intended. Even the rear Renault Alpine stickers and the "V6 Turbo" ones on the sides of the rear glass hatch, with their exquisitely 80s style have not lost their shine and are well installed with no missing or peeling parts. All the glass seals, windshield and rear hatch included, are in good conditions and look almost new, we're sure that the dry and warm conditions this car was stored in helped a lot with that.

The Renault badged wheels are void of any major defects and curb rash, in other words they look more than fine. The tyres, on the other hand, should be replaced in order to drive the car safely given their age.

Interior

Just like the body, the interior of this GTA V6 Turbo is preserved and unrestored. The black leather seats, which are encased inside the futuristic interior that wraps around the dashboard in a spaceship-like fashion, are in decent condition for their age with only some minor creasing and cracking in the finish to detract from their otherwise great state. The minimalist dashboard, which encases a Veglia speedometer and rev meter, is void of defects and the odometer reads 45052km, a surpringly low number which we believe to be accurate given the extensive documentation we received with the car and the fact that it sat for many years in a private, climate controlled museum. All the other switches, as well as the original Philips radio with a manual multi-band equalizer, are equally well preserved. The three spoke steering wheel and the climate controls which sit in the center console are, on the other hand, quite worn with many scratches and dings to remind us that this car actually saw some use over the years. The shift knob, which should be matte black, is a bit too shiny at the top, is if it was polished by the many gear shifts this car's previous owner enjoyed during their road trips.

The plastic and and fabric door cards are in great condition and in near mint conditions while the carpet is clean and doesn't show any appreciable signs of wear. Since this car is entirely original and unmolested it's worth mentioning the presence of a fire extinguisher at the bottom of the passenger seat.

Mechanical

Having spent most of its life in dry, climated controlled storage and with a body that's almost entirely made of polyester and fibreglass, this Alpine GTA V6 Turbo is almost entirely rust free. The steel wishbone frame equally has no real signs of rusts, save from some some minor spots where the original powder coat is slightly bubbling and flaking. Both the front and rear suspension systems are well preserved and have no signs of repairs. What's really surprising, however, is the lack of scratches underneath such a low-sitting car. A car which, we'd like to remind you, was built well before active suspension systems capable of rising the body were commonplace as it's the case with today's sportscars. The engine bay, which houses the 90° V6 PRV Turbo engine is clean and tidy and both the engine and gearbox only have some minor oil leaks to remind us that this is a 33 years old car and not a new example that just left the factory as one could effectively believe! The exhaust system is leak-free and barely oxidized, another memento of the ideal conditions this car sat in for most of its life in.

History

This Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo, chassis n. K004825 was built in 1989 and never left the city it was first sold in, while also spending 20 years under the same owner. Given the amount of documentation, booklets and invoices this futuristic 944 competitor comes with we are fairly confident that each of its previous owners treated her well, and the years spent in a climate controlled museum really prevented its body, chassis and drivetrain from showing any real signs of ageing.

Summary

The Renault Alpine GTA V6 is a fairly rare car given its relatively poor sales figures and being a not excessively expensive car to own and run many owners actually enjoyed driving theirs often. Finding a low mileage, well preserved and restored example is actually quite a rarity. We believe that this car is very close to being in "museum" conditions, save from the defects we tried to point out to the best of our ability. However, should the new owner choose to drive it instead of keeping it in static display we'd like to suggest that he undertakes all the necessary work to make sure it is road worthy.

Bidders MUST ensure they are aware of the registration situation of a car in auction, and whether it will be possible to export/register a vehicle in their country BEFORE they bid.

All vehicles MUST BE COLLECTED WITHIN 7-DAYS of the auction end. Storage fees of £180 + VAT apply (per week) thereafter without exception.

If needed, Footman James classic car insurance and Classic Concierge offer storage can offer you options, plus we have a list of contacts who can help with transport and shipping both domestic and international.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we always encourage bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at those vehicles which are delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Also, localised paint repairs are common with collectable and classic cars and if they have been professionally carried out then they may be impossible to detect, even if we see the car in person. So, unless we state otherwise, please assume that any vehicle could have had remedial bodywork at some point in its life.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using basic cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.

Please note that this is sold as seen (Caveat Emptor) and that, as is normal for used goods bought at auction, a return policy does not apply. See our FAQs for more info, and feel free to inspect any vehicle as much as you wish.
