Background

Introduced in 2011 with the tagline of “The meanest green car in the world” the F10 5-Series based Alpina D5 BiTurbo utilises the basic chassis, construction and platform of the F10, and - to quote the inimitable Spinal Tap - turns it up to eleven.

With a subtle, yet distinctly more aggressive body kit - including wider arches, air dams, spoilers and Alpina-specific wheels - along with upgrades to the interior, Alpina are renowned for taking an already great car, and making it even better, with the D5 BiTurbo being no exception.

Under the bonnet, the standard N57 inline-six turbo diesel engine from the 535d remains, though Alpina’s engineering wizards have extracted additional power and torque from the setup, with headline figures now sitting at 347bhp and 516 lb-ft of torque, whilst the standard gearbox is removed in favour of an eight-speed ZF ‘switch-tronic’ item which is also shared with the F10 B5.

As a result of the above fettling, this family sedan can now sprint from 0-62 in just 5.1 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 171 mph, making it not only the perfect Autobahn cruiser, but also a true under-the-radar hero.

Oh, and it’ll comfortably return over 40mpg on a long run.

Overview

First registered in November 2012 and supplied new by Sytner Nottingham, this Titanium Silver with full Black Alpina Lavalinia Leather F10 D5 BiTurbo is every inch the ‘sleeper’ blending in with standard F10 5-Series to all but the most knowledgeable enthusiasts.

Purchased by our vendor in February 2022, this wonderfully-specified D5, has seen limited use whilst in its current ownership, but - as our vendor puts it - that is all that is required to appreciate its engineering prowess, quality and refinement, and it makes any journey an absolute joy.

Garaged throughout its current ownership, it is clear that this D5 BiTurbo has been cherished by its previous owners also, judging from its low mileage, thorough service history and overall condition.

Whilst the D5 was well-specified from new (as all Alpina models are, naturally) there are a number of additional factory options that make this particular example stand out, such as memory seats, rear-zone air conditioning, power sunroof, 360 surround and reversing cameras and much more, totalling in fact, well into five figures worth.

The current owner is a chartered mechanical engineer by trade, making them a naturally-fastidious owner for any vehicle. The fact that the only issue that they’re aware of is a minor inconvenience related to the keyless entry system (specifically, the system on the driver’s door is a little ‘sluggish’) only furthers the notion that this is a truly excellent example of the mighty eco-friendly ‘Q’ car that is the D5 Biturbo.

Exterior

Cherished and cosseted throughout its lifetime as you’d expect a high-performance, rare vehicle such as this to be, the exterior of this D5 presents in outstanding condition throughout.

The bodywork, for example, is straight along both flanks, with nary a dent not scuff to be reported. Similarly, the panel gaps throughout the vehicle are crisp and finished with Germanic precision, showing no signs of any impact damage.

At the front of the vehicle, there are some stone chips and minor marks to be found in the paintwork - commensurate for a high-speed vehicle such as this - whilst there is also a larger touched-in mark, as seen on image 257 in the extensive gallery below.

Other than the light smattering of stone chips and various light, considered usage marks, the only other aesthetic blemish we can find on the bodywork of this D5 is the slight corrosion noted to the exhaust tips, though we are being very particular indeed.

Below the arches, the trademark Alpina multi-spoke wheels are in good order, showing only some light marks and imperfections. All four wheels are wrapped in matching Michelin Pilot Sport rubber - always a reassuring sign on any performance vehicle, and often a good indicator of a fastidious and caring owner, in our experience.

Interior

As with the paint and bodywork, the luxuriously-appointed cabin of this Autobahn cruise missile is in excellent condition, having enjoyed a gentle, pampered life throughout its 10 years and 42,000 miles of existence.

The optional 'Comfort' electric seats, for example, show only the lightest signs of creasing to indicate that they’ve been used, with no rips, tears or damage to speak of.

Similarly, the carpets, mats, headliner and door cards - the latter of which are also trimmed in leather with Alpina-specific designs - show virtually no signs of any wear-and-tear, and certainly no indicators of any damage or reckless ownership.

Being particularly picky, there are some (very) minor marks to the polished wood trim, steering wheel and shifter, but this is commensurate on high-traffic areas, especially for a vehicle that has been used and enjoyed.

In the rear, the luggage compartment looks almost pristine, whilst the fold-down tool kit is present and correct.

There are no reported faults from any of the systems, including BMW navigation, switches, or displays within the vehicle, whilst the on-board service and health-check system shows a glowing status report, with the next inspection due in June 2022.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six engine presents wonderfully - in keeping with the rest of the vehicle’s condition - though our view is somewhat obscured by the numerous plastic panels and covers fitted to the vehicle.

Looking underneath the bodywork, the chassis is in excellent shape, with no signs of any corrosion, leaks or damage that would set our alarm bells ringing.

Out on the road, there are no reported faults with the vehicle’s engine, transmission, chassis or suspension systems, nor any reports of untoward noises, knocks or behaviours.

The most recent MoT exam - dated 08 February 2022 - shows a clean first-time pass with no advisory items.

History

Included with the vehicle is an impressive service history, conducted entirely by BMW authorised dealerships, which is always a positive sign for any specialist vehicle. That said, the joy of an Alpina is that it can be serviced at any BMW dealership, giving supercar-like performance without the associated servicing costs!

As ever, we’ve photographed the full extent of documentation that is included with the vehicle, and this is available to view towards the end of the gallery below.

A few highlights of this documentation include:

- The V5, showing just 3 former keepers

- Stamped service record

- Invoices and reports from servicing, carried out by BMW dealerships

- The full complement of Alpina handbooks, including the book wallet

- MoT certificates

- Miscellaneous invoices for works carried out to the vehicle throughout its lifetime

- Two sets of key fobs

Summary

With the ability to break the 150mph barrier with ease, MPGs in the 40+ range, Alpina styling and BMW reliability, there is seemingly nothing that this D5 BiTurbo cannot do, and that is the beauty of this Alpina super saloons.

Able to carry the family in comfort and yet reward its owner with an impressive driving experience regardless of the situation, it’s no wonder that Alpina have long been the ‘grown up’ enthusiasts car of choice, and this is no exception.

Presented in outstanding condition throughout and benefitting from a strong service history, this 2012 Alpina D5 (F10) BiTurbo is offered for sale with an estimate of £20,000 to £25,000 - offering, in our view, a heck of a lot of car for the money.
