Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ Everything you need for a terrific project. With Lincoln V8 power. ”

Believed one of only 63 built between 1952 and 1954.

Background

Sydney Allard founded Allard Motor Company in 1936, producing potent sports racing cars powered by Ford V8 and Lincoln V12 engines. Allard racing cars continued to prove themselves as capable competitors, with one example winning the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally piloted by Mr. Allard himself, narrowly defeating Sir Stirling Moss. That same year, Allard released a new touring car based on their venerable J2 racing car, the K3.

Featuring a reinforced chromoly-tube chassis, Allard's innovative divided front axle suspension system, racing steering ratios, and a host of potent American engines, The K3 is a race-car at heart, beneath an all-aluminium envelope body. While the racing attributes limited everyday practicality, the K3 offered undeniable performance along with some welcome luxuries, like seating for three, a spacious trunk, and a convertible top.

The concessions made for performance, along with the steep $5,300 asking price, made the K3's appeal as a touring car suffer. As a result, only 63 of these exhilarating roadsters were produced and just 46 are thought to remain today.

Overview

This very rare Allard K3 Roadster project looks as if it may have been raced or intended for racing at some point in its life – many of them were.

We say that because it has a Lincoln V8 under the bonnet and a sizeable bonnet bulge of the sort that were often fitted to these cars in order to accommodate substantial carburettor units.

It also has one blanked-off headlamp which, again, is a sign of racing provenance.

So, this may be an even rarer expression of a model that has just 46 survivors today.

The car is filled with boxes of mechanical, interior and trim components, making this a reasonably complete collection of parts for restoration and refurbishment.

This vehicle is currently in storage at CARS Europe BV. If you require a quote for shipping anywhere in the world, please contact them direct (details below).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their legal proof of purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It must be collected within 7-days of the auction end. Storage charges (€70 + local VAT per car per week) will commence from the sixth day following the auction end.  These must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carsworldwide.com.

Exterior

The bodywork has a fair number of dinks and scrapes to it throughout but it seems to us to be intact, free of any terminal corrosion and possessed of a decent amount of structural integrity.

The doors are detached and currently inside the car.

There are window frames and glass, bumpers and what remains of the hood and frame accompanying the car.

The car sits on four wire wheels of mixed provenance.

Interior

The bodywork is a shell and, consequently, there’s no interior to describe aside from what appears to be a relatively intact dashboard.

The odometer reads 19,558 miles, although we clearly can’t vouch for the veracity of that figure.

Among the interior parts accompanying the car are elements of the floor pan, frames and springs for the seats, and assorted interior fixtures and fittings.

Mechanical

The car comes with its Lincoln V8 in situ, plus a variety of mechanical components including elements of the exhaust, braking and clutch systems.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

It does, however, come with a V5C UK registration document dating from 2014.

Summary

These fabulous pedigree sports cars are very few and far between today.

This is a rare opportunity to restore one of the handful of survivors to its full and very impressive former glory.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of €40,000 - €50,000.

The car is currently in storage, you can see a picture of the collection as it stands today at the very bottom of the photo gallery.
