Mark's review

Mark Livesey - Consignment Specialist Message Mark

“ A glorious British open-top classic. They only made about 64. ”

Just three former keepers, and comes with a UK original V5 registration certificate.

Background

Sydney Allard founded Allard Motor Company in 1936, producing potent sports racing cars powered by Ford V8 and Lincoln V12 engines. Allard racing cars continued to prove themselves as capable competitors, with one example winning the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally piloted by Mr. Allard himself, narrowly defeating Sir Stirling Moss. That same year, Allard released a new touring car based on their venerable J2 racing car, the K3.

Featuring a reinforced chromoly-tube chassis, Allard's innovative divided front axle suspension system, racing steering ratios, and a host of potent American engines, The K3 is a race-car at heart, beneath an all-aluminium envelope body. While the racing attributes limited everyday practicality, the K3 offered undeniable performance along with some welcome luxuries, like seating for three, a spacious trunk, and a convertible top.

The concessions made for performance, along with the steep $5,300 asking price, made the K3's appeal as a touring car suffer. As a result, only 63 of these exhilarating roadsters were produced and just 46 are thought to remain today.

Overview

This very rare Allard K3 Roadster comes with Cadillac’s proven OHV V8 and dual Carter WCFB carburettors.

It is a complete car and is in decent overall condition

The odometer reads 78,727 miles, although we can’t vouch for the accuracy of that figure.

We noticed that it has a 1956 Watkins Glen ‘Race Communications’ badge above the dashboard and an ‘Amelia Island’ fob attached to the ignition key.

What stories this car might tell.

Exterior

The bodywork has endured the passage of time very well and the car is reassuringly free of any major dinks or dents.

There is what appears to be a little corrosive pitting at the base of the front wings and the front and rear bumpers are carrying a few dents.

Otherwise, however, the bodywork is carrying a number and distribution of scuffs, stone chips and patches of paint discolouration that are wholly commensurate with the car’s age and overall condition.

All five wire wheels look to be well preserved, from what we can see.

The cars lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings are in good order, as is the black fabric hood and tonneau cover.

Interior

The interior is as good as the exterior and has retained a good deal of integrity.

The red leather upholstery on the bench seat has some gentle patina but is otherwise remarkably free of creasing or other signs of wear.

The black padded dashboard surround is good, as is the metal face of the instrument binnacle.

The door cards, carpets and mats are also very reasonable.

The wooden steering wheel rim is cracked and split in numerous places.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay look to have been well looked-after and are clean, dry and orderly from what we can see.

We can’t vouch for the car’s mechanical integrity as we haven’t started or driven it.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

It does, however, come with a V5C UK registration document dating from 2013.
