Background
In 1995, at the Geneva Motor Show, alongside the new GTV Alfa Romeo unveiled a new two-seater model with an open body. Derived from the coupe - with which it also shares the body style, designed by Pininfarina - the Spider thus rests on the Fiat group's Tipo 2 floorpan, a front-wheel-drive architecture that the Milanese company had employed a few years earlier for the Alfa 155. The "spirit" of the old Duetto’s is revived in a car that is a little less "sanguine" in driving, but more modern and in step with the times, as well as faster thanks to a more powerful four-cylinder (Twin Spark) and V6 (2.0 litre turbocharged and 3.0 litre naturally aspirated) engines (all gasoline-powered). In 1998 the range benefited from a slight restyling, while five years later Alfa entrusted Giugiaro with the task of redesigning the front end: a true second series was born, which would remain on the scene until 2005, totalling about 80,000 examples.
