Overview

The Spider name goes back well over half a century, with some of the most beautiful cars the world has seen having worn the badge on their boot lids, and this latest generation keeps the tradition of bold and stylish design alive, with a timeless design that looks as fresh today as when it was revealed.

This particular 2.2 JTS model has its folder of manuals and log book, which shows that in its initial year it covered 12,000 miles in time for the first service with an Alfa main dealer, but after that was used lightly covering only a few thousand miles between annual services. The overall condition, regular book stamps and matching top quality tyres all round are indicators of a car that has been well loved and taken good care of.

Exterior

Alfas, and Spiders even more, look very good in red, and the paint on this car is excellent, there are very few marks or stone chips to be found around the car. There is a little rash of chips on the lower edge behind a wheel but that is the worst.

At the front the stacked lights look elegant and add huge visual interest, there is a little pitting in the plastic chrome surrounds but this is hidden when the bonnet is shut.

The hood fabric is dark black and not creased or damaged, and the power roof folds away correctly, the windows and tonneau panel all moving as they should.

The allow wheels are in good shape, theres no kerb damage or flaking paint and the Goodyear Eagle tyres have good tread.

The only issue we noticed was the drivers door mirror glass is cracked and it doesn’t adjust.

Interior

Alfa leather seats are notable for their comfort, support and the quality of the hide which, if treated correctly will last years and hundreds of thousands of miles. These seats are in superb condition, just a little patina of lines on the drivers bolster and the box pleat centres are firm and unmarked, and the embroidered cross and serpent logos in the headrests make them look even more special.

The leather steering wheel and gearknob are show little sign of wear although a full size Alfa bonnet badge has been fitted to the centre of the wheel. The door cards and dash top are very good, and the distinctive brushed aluminium dashboard looks good, but typical of all 939 Spiders, Breras and 159s, there are some marks below the ignition slot from hanging keys.

Under the mats, the carpets are not damaged, the passenger side is like new and drivers side is a little discoloured around the pedals.

There are lockable stowage bins behind the seats and useful storage space.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet all is clean and presentable, its not a show winner but there are no visible leaks and the engine runs and idles well. There are some surface marks on the black slam panel behind the headlamps.

Looking beneath the car we can see the factory underseal looks un damaged and all appears solid and free of corrosion, the tyres look good and plastic under trays and wheel arch liners are all tidy.

History

The Alfa has had 4 previous keepers in its life, and has worn 2 private number plates, today it carries its correct age related registration number again.

It was MOT’d in March this year, passing without any advisories, at the same time had a full service to manufacturer spec, the roof mechanism was serviced including changing the flap motor gears on both sides and the air conditioning condenser was replaced and the system re-gassed.

Summary

This generation of Alfa was incredibly well built, the Italians poached engineers from the big German brands to up build quality but with home grown design kept the flair and character. These are among the most striking and good looking soft tops on the market, and this appears to be a very well kept example in excellent condition - paint, panels, interior, hood and tyres are all as good as you would hope and the car runs well.

Our estimate for this car is £8,000 - £12,000.
