Background

One of the most recognisable and iconic sports cars in the world, the Alfa Spider is more than a pretty face, the rear wheel drive soft top was home to one of the greatest engines in the world - the Alfa twin cam. The Series 4 Alfa Spider was launched in 1990, the Pininfarina styled shell was much the same as the previous incarnation but now had wrap around, integrated bumpers and full width tail lights across the rear of the car. Under the bonnet there was now Bosch electronic fuel injection on all but the European 1600 which came with Webber carbs.

Overview

Like all Alfas this Spider started life in Italy, but this stayed there until very recently, its UK life only starting when it was imported in 2016. To the knowledge of the owner and the car has not needed any major work to the chassis or running gearbox looks like it had an LPG system installed when in Italy.

Exterior

Straying from the stereotypical Rosso Red, this Spider is resplendent in yellow, perfect for a car that craves and deserves attention. The body panels are in very nice shape, with no dents or dings around the car and a deep shine to the paintwork. Some micro blisters have appeared on the front wing tops behind the headlamps, and slightly larger ones across the nose while further back there is a blister on the near side rear wheel arch.

New right hand drive headlamps were bought and fitted in 2021. It's perhaps surprising to see a car like this wearing hubcaps, but it is and they are original and haven’t met with any kerbs, and all have matching and recent looking Avon tyres.

The black hood raises and lowers easily. It is in superb condition, deep black fabric with no rips or tears and the rear window is clear and not creased.

Interior

The all black interior is lifted by typical Alfa Romeo detailing, with diagonal stitched door cards and stitching on the seats. Alfa interiors are often long lasting and the seats hide the miles, and you would think this car had less than half its mileage looking at the seats. The condition of the cabin is outstanding, those door cards are excellent and the carpets show very little wear.

The dashboard has no cracks or scratches and there is even a period correct Alpine stereo fitted, an expensive upgrade at the time, with pod speakers in the small luggage area behind the seats. One of the heater controls has lost its knob but doesnt affect operation.

Mechanical

2018 was a busy year for this little Spider. Much of the work was done by Alfa specialist Italia Speed. The gearbox was removed in order to fit a new clutch, and the gear change is quite excellent, and while the car was stripped the engine mounts were replaced and as part of a major service the rocker cover gasket changed.

Italia Speed fitted a new exhaust and suspension arms, and it was sent to a rolling road to be tuned to get the best from the 1600cc twin cam engine.

Under the car the chassis and floor pan look very solid and the engine underside appears to be free of any leaks.

History

When the clutch was changed the Alfa specialist also invoiced for removing an LPG kit which was installed in Italy and last year the headlights were updated for new right hand drive units. Unfortunately, although there are registration documents from Italy we don't have any service records from that time.

Summary

Although we only got to drive this Alfa around a car park, its eagerness to rev, the delightful gear change and the strong colour make this car desirable, the great condition inside and out make it even more so. These are great drivers cars as well as pretty machines and values of classic Alfas keep rising so now is a great time to buy.

We estimate for this Alfa Romeo Spider to reach anywhere between £6,000 - £10,000.
