“ Only 3 Owners and Full Service History ”

Few convertible sportscars look as good as an Alfa Romeo Spider, and when you dial in excellent reliability and a high degree of resistance to rust you should feel all your old reservations melt away; this is a convertible you can buy with your head and your heart.

As to value, we suspect the virtual hammer will drop somewhere between £7,000 and £9,000. We can see this wonderful example drawing an awful lot of interest, so who knows where it’ll end…

Viewing is always encouraged, and this particular car is located with the seller in Fernhurst,; we are open weekdays 9am-5pm, to arrange an appointment please use the Contact Seller button at the top of the listing. Feel free to ask any questions or make observations in the comments section below, or try our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.

Background

The Pininfarina-designed Alfa Romeo Brera and Spider entered production in 2005 with the 2+2 coupé being offered first and the convertible following a year later.

The top-of-the-range V6 offers a top speed of 155mph after passing 62mph in as little as 6.8 seconds thanks to the traction provided by the sophisticated Torsen four-wheel drive that allows the full 256bhp and 237 lb.ft of torque to be deployed without fuss.

A 1.75-litre turbocharged petrol followed, as did a 2.0-litre, inline-four turbo-diesel.

Overview

With only three registered keepers, this delightful Alfa Romeo Spider is fitted with the 2.2-litre, 182bhp four-cylinder engine that when new endowed the Italian convertible with a top speed of almost 140mph and 62mph from rest time of 8.8 seconds.

Finished in a stunning silver with a contrasting black leather interior, it has covered fewer than 43,000 miles and comes with a full service history.

Taken in part-exchange by the seller from an elderly local man who has continued to maintain it very well while it was in his hands, the Spider is with the seller at his garage in Fernhurst, West Sussex.

Exterior

From the images, the silver colour gives the Spider a hewn-from-solid look the razor-sharp shutlines further reinforce; if you’ve still got lingering doubts about Italian build quality then surely this car should set your mind at rest.

Seemingly much-loved over its lifetime, the Spider still presents very well with a lovely shine to the finish and what seems an absence of the sort of dents, dinks, and other minor damage that betray careless owners.

The folding black roof is in great shape too, and it lowers and rises as it should at the touch of a button. It also seals tightly when it is up, offering a high-degree of weather resistance; long gone are the days when driving a convertible meant having to put up with water leaks and unbearable wind noise.

The roof folds down beneath a slid tonneau cover to keep the Spider’s lines clean and twin rollover hoops provide a high degree of safety in the event of an accident. There’s also a tiny-but-effective wind deflector for ruffle-free motoring, even at motorway speeds.

The light lenses, badges and glazing all appear good, too. This is a very nicely presented example of an ever-popular convertible sportscar.

That said, it isn’t perfect. The 17-inch alloy wheels are in a decent condition but they would benefit from being refurbished as some of the lacquer is peeling and there is the odd small scuff (e.g. #141). More encouragingly, the tyres are Michelin Primacy 4 on the front and Pirelli P-Zero Nero on the rear. All look to have good tread.

Interior

The black leather interior is not only hugely practical, it also provides a lovely contrast to the silver coachwork.

It, like the coachwork, is in good shape, with the front seats being singled out for praise. As snug and supportive as you’d hope for in a car with the Alfa’s reputation for performance, they’re as comfortable as they are good to look at – and they look very good indeed.

Embossed with the Alfa Romeo logo on the headrests, only slight cracking to the outer edge of the driver’s seat and a seam that’s started to let go give their age away. (That we should all be so lucky, eh?)

The door cards are very good, as are the sill plates. Both are areas where a careless owner will leave their mark and the fact these are as good as they are speaks volumes.

The carpets are also good, as are the simple but wonderfully legible dashboard and centre console.

Mechanical

The Alfa’s service history comprises eight stamps in the service history booklet plus the PDI. The first were by HR Owen with a couple of independent garages thereafter before the last owner passed on the care of his beloved Alfa to RT Mechanics, an independent specialist local to him.

We are told that the stamps in the booklet are at the following mileages: 7,000 miles; 22,000 miles; 29,000 miles; 32,000 miles; 27,000 miles; 38,000 miles; 39,000 miles; and, 41,000 miles.

The service history is, of course, available to view with the car at the seller’s garage in Fernhurst, West Sussex

The freshly refurbished underside looks good, and the online MoT history reinforces the car’s impeccable curation.

History

The Alfa’s MoT certificate, which is valid until July 2023, was gained, like so many before, without a single advisory point being raised. So much for the unreliability and fragility of Italian sportscars, huh?

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and the Alfa also comes with its stamped service history booklet plus some old invoices and expired MoT certificates.

Few convertible sportscars look as good as an Alfa Romeo Spider, and when you dial in excellent reliability and a high degree of resistance to rust you should feel all your old reservations melt away; this is a convertible you can buy with your head and your heart.
